teens who quit social media (tiktok, instagram...) do you ever feel left out because your friends talk about a trend you know nothing about?

Back to Help & Advice

i was thinking about quitting, mostly tiktok (i barely use instagram), but i'm scared about not knowing the latest trends and feeling left out from conversations

If this sounds mean, i apologize in advance but i can't imagine revolving around social media being fulfilling. If your friends have nothing to talk about other than recent trends i would personally find that a little concerning. Its likely if you're unaware, they would just fill you in or explain it to you. You shouldn't force yourself to do something just because you believe your friends won't like you anymore because of they really care they will find other things to talk about or bring up other things. I'm not saying your friends don't care about you by any means. I've never had tic-tok and when someone mentions something i just chill because there will be many times where i talk about an Anime or a game that none of my friends have played or only a few and they're still willing to listen; they should still take an interest in you if they're good friends. Just listening to the jibberjabber should be fine, partaking isn't ALWAYS necessary. This was a bit convoluted i do admit but point is, you're not required to share interest with friends, there's ways to still speak to them. If you're required to "be a certain way" or "do a certain thing" in order to be someone's friend its simply not worth it.

@Toffee.moon thank you for answering! fortunately me and my friends talk about anything really, tiktok would just be another topic we share to talk about when together. we also talk abt games/animes and manga we are interested in!

Only a few of my friends are online enough to know the current thing, so they're usually the odd-man-out if they bring it up. But in the times where it does dominate the conversation, I'm fine taking a backseat. I don't have any regrets about tuning out from that noise and most bits I hear from it now don't interest me much. If I really wanted to know about it though, I could just ask them.
If you think quitting TikTok would be good for you, then I wouldn't let it hold you back. You might even find that you're not as into the trends as algorithms would have you believe. Or, if you are, or if it leaves you out of many conversations, you can always just ask your friends what they're on about.

Like tbh I don't have anything tiktok, insta not even YouTube kids I'm a teen bruv but whatever my friends keep me informed I don't really know what they talk about sometimes but my friend explain and don't leave me out because of that. I just think u need the right friends and share some interest and then it'll be fine:3
