Tips for a beginner drummer?

Back to Help & Advice

haii ummm so I signed up to be part of the junior percussion at my new school. It's been a want of mine to learn an instrument, more specifically bass guitar but the spots were full so I chose the next best optionn. I have no expereince whatsoever but I have the determination to learnn. My first class is this tuesday sooo I was wondering if there's something I could do because I don't like the idea of walking in COMPLETELY empty handed, yknow?

OMGG IF YOU EVER DO START LEARNING BASS LMK!! I LOVEEEEE BASS! also good luck!! i don't play drums yet, but i wanna learn soooooo badddd </3

practice with a metronome!! there's many digital ones you can use in your browser and it seriously helps so much. i would reccomend starting really slow (like 50 bpm or something) and work your way up!

@flowersforemily thankkk youuu that's what I planned on doing since I feel like staying on beat will be harddd(~﹃~)~zZ

@GORGELLA

it can be really difficult!!! something else you can try is keeping in time by playing along to recordings of songs

hello, I am a beginner myself for a garage band . But what the drum teacher has been teaching me is a simple beginning beat ,

With the right hand, begin a steady rhythm

(“1 and 2 and 3 and 4”) do this beat , hit with that hand/stick, counting the and’s

Then, with the left hand,

Hit on both “2” and “4”

So.. begin rhythm

Then the test here is to keep using your right hand on that rhythm and ALSO doing that repetitive “2” and “4” hit. You cannot stop using the right hand when you hit on 2 and 4. If you can do all of this for a total of 3 minutes without messing up, you are good! You can add in your foot after you learn the reflexes of the beat. Add in a singular stomp with your left foot for every “1” beat.

So (foot) 1 and (hit with left) 2 and 3 and (hit with left) and 4. Then keep going.

This is a lot easier to understand much better with visual demonstration.. but , I hope it makes sense. The key to drumming is to be able to use all of your limbs at the same time, to keep the music flowing. Your teacher might begin teaching with this exact beat, so this is kind of heads up! (´• ω •`)

@mrsurrealist omg I just tried this with like my hands and it's actually harrddd. Doesn't matter I'll get there😔🥀💔

@GORGELLA

It had taken me a little while to get it , but I assure you , you will Too!!!!!!

@mrsurrealist thank youuuu you're so sweet!!!!!

Omg so coolllll >___< ive been playing drums for 4 years!!

My advice for beginners is learn how to hold the drumstick!!!!!... I KNOW it sounds "basic" af but i actually used to hold it the wrong way and then when I had to fix it IT WAS HELL. so pls make sure to learn the proper grips and choose ur favorite variation before u form the habit of doing it wrong🙏🙏

I recommend these videos, i used them when i was learning:

https://youtu.be/EePm3QsqnOM?is=YQ_gcBhYYkFFhaoH

https://youtu.be/6nq-JeTUIEY?is=mrgbXWPGZSBmcJAc

Even if its hard af in the beginning and u just want to hold it with ur whole hand for more control.. dont give in 🙏😭 I promise this is gonna help u A LOT in the future

While u practice the grip u should also do the basic rudiments (single stroke rolls and paradiddle basically) with the metronome, and the exercises surrealist said too >__<

Thats pretty much it!!

Once ur more confident with ur grip and rudiments u can start increasing speed and playing some of the rhythms u like :))

Good luckkkk i hope u like the drums!! ^^

@Lalaa_x3 omggg thank you from saving me the trouble!!!! i'll definetely be looking into ittt

i recommend u learn how to read the notation, find a metronome (there are many online) and get started with the rudiments single stroke roll, single stroke four, double stroke, single paradiddle, and flam as they are more common in music and can get u started building confidence :3

@maxsupercute YESSS OKAYY THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!!!!:meow:
