Like, fanfics that follow what a character's physically doing, but recap memories, people, set the scene, touch on what they're reflecting on. At what point is this fine and at what point is it just empty talk?
i mean it doesn't seem like these fics can ever reach to becoming "empty" talk if it still serves the purpose of exploring a character, their perspective & their depth. this basically sounds like the "character study" fanfiction genre; which is liked in fandom all while just particularly focusing on one character's perspective, and may not have much things going on or have tons of writing probably considered "filler" (not progressing any plot, conflict, or action, except for the sake of focusing on characters internally--which can be considered "empty" but i and many people disagree with that). so im not really sure how "empty talk" is used here (to say the talk doesn't progress any plot or action i'm assuming?), but if the talk fails to serve the purpose of exploring a character by being inaccurate of them, then i guess it can be considered "empty talk" since that wouldn't be effective for, well, exploration and any introspection. which isnt really that great for a fanfiction based on those things.
if any writing serves a purpose then its fine. sometimes writing may not progress anything but is important to build up a whole character; its like building a puzzle with pieces of writing. which is something i personally like!
