what laptop should i get?

Back to Web & Tech

so i was going to post this as a blog but i feel like more people will see it as a forum so yeah XD,

anyways ive been looking into laptops and desktops to get for my birthday, at first it was the ibook g4 then the imac g4 then the macbook a1181 and now im looking into some windows 7 desktops, so what i want is def a laptop but ofc it has to be from 2001-2009 and still has that "2000s look" and i want to be able to run logic pro 8-9 or fl studio 6-9, i dont care about games to much but i def want to run games from the cd rom era, i want to have something steam will run on bc i like having a desktop pet (i have a w10 pc atm so i can transfer stuff or mod things if i need to) but i understand if thats just not possible. does anyone have any recs that fit that category?

ANYWAYSSSS BYEEEEEE

suicide is a break from the noise, loneliness is a forever depression.

Thinkpads from that era are nice since you can upgrade them, though keep in mind steam won't work on anything older than windows 10 anymore. You can put linux on the old hardware and it would run fine though. You might be able to find a dell or hp for cheap from that time also but they probably will be in pretty poor shape. Macbooks will be better taken care of generally but far fewer games will run on them. Also while it is possible to get windows 11 installed on those old machines it isn't technically supported. None of them will have a tpm 2.0 chip. Upgrade the hdd to an ssd if it hasn't been done already and it should be pretty snappy. Steam ended support for win7 and below a while ago.

@KratosPS I agree with this feller. Get a used laptop from like 5 years ago and run Linux on it. You'll be able to run all your favorite old school programs using WINE (with some tinkering). Plus, then you can still run most of your Steam library no prob. Even better, you can make it look like Windows 7. Here's the project for that: https://gist.github.com/Microck/57e00541cc649a4d17f50d314ef9922b

I'd recommend Debian for that, btw.

@tellmesecrets

Just don't be like me and install Gentoo on your main machine. Go for it once you have some more experience with Linux.

@KratosPS I second this. I recently bought a T410 for like $100 with Win 7 installed and its a dream. It's quickly becoming my favorite laptop. I also plan to upgrade some of the internal hardware, which is sort of a breeze with T410s. You can just about make them evergreen if you know what you're doing.

There's a project that people developed (and I can totally send you their Discord if you want) a modded version of Windows 10, designed to look, feel, and operate like Windows 7! If that's something you're interested in, I would be happy to share it with you!

@XxB3ASTEDK1TTYxX Please ask yourself why a moderator of the site would put you in harm’s way, first of all.

Secondly, it’s not a scam as I’ve done this, myself. The project is called Classic7. You’re welcome 🤧

See my reply to @KratosPS for suggestions. As far as Steam goes, you're probably gonna wanna keep that to a more modern machine/OS. You CAN technically download an older Steam version for Windows 7. You do not want any financial or banking information on any machine that uses Windows 7 right now. Windows 7 can still be fun but you really need to know what you're doing and what to avoid. I would like to make a forum post about dos and don'ts for Windows 7 in 2026.

Alternatively, you might try Q4OS as an operating system. You can get the most recent Andromeda Trinity version. Once installed, you can easily install an XPQ4 layer that pretty perfectly mimics Windows 7. I am happy to discuss both these further if you want.
