Thing that should be common knowledge?

What’s something you think should be common knowledge/fact, but isn’t?

I’ll go first:

As someone who has been in multiple fandom spaces and got into fanfic pretty young, it should be pretty well known that if you don’t like something, don’t read/consume content with that stuff in it. Yes, this is about the Ao3 debate. And before anyone gets on me, I like to think I had a pretty natural fan fic progression. Are there topics and things that are handled poorly/offensively? Yes. But trust me when I say, that’s the case for ALL fanfic spaces. YouTube visual novels and texting stories, Wattpad, tumblr, Ao3- you can find it anywhere. 

In fact, I’d argue Ao3 is better when it comes to disclosing what’s in a fic. Because as someone who was an AVID Wattpad user- I’m talking nightly readings for nearly four years- you really went into most fics blind. Tagging was usually pretty garbage and I’ve come across some horrendous stuff completely unexpected.

Ao3 is pretty straight forward and maybe that’s where the anger comes from- like a curiosity killed the cat sorta thing yk?

Anyway, that’s my take

I never read fanfic before so maybe I'm missing context but i don't see too much issue with consuming media you don't like. I understand your point, don't complain about there being sweets in a sweet shop (bad example) but at the same time, reading/watching stuff you hate helps to refine your tastes in my opinion. You're bound to accidentally watch something you don't like so understanding the signs of something being not to your tastes is beneficial in that situation. As long as its not to the creator or a fan, i think hating media is important because it gives you something to vent frustration on without harming anyone. 

Its also good to consider the fact that just because you dislike something , doesn't mean it's bad. There's still plenty to take away from the media you don't like, sometimes it's worth it to watch a genre you can't stand simply because one aspect interests you. Being too stuck in your own comfort zone can lead to judging other media too harshly due to how different it is.

 I apologize if this was confusing or if it seemed i missed to point but again, i personally think sitting through what you dislike gives you a better understanding of media as a whole.
