but essentially, i was talking to a friend of mine about the evolution of yaoi as a term for BL, and how the term has fallen out of fashion in japan (it’s like referring to phones as telephones, not wrong but just out of place). i explained to her that the way western BL readers categorize BL (that being, BL = no smut, yaoi = smut) isn’t technically wrong but is kind of overcomplicating things because both BL and “yaoi” have many overlapping themes + may have certain aspects which are present in the other category.

this girl (mind you, i don’t even know her that well, but we are somewhat familiar with e/other because of mutual friends) interjects by saying that i was “irritating” her and she basically tried to lecture me on how i was wrong and she for some reason mentioned shounen-ai and how given isn’t shounen-ai because of the most recent manga release (only half wrong imo, one release having explicit sex doesn’t mean the whole series stops being shounen-ai). she’s a pretty social and popular girl, so she had her other friend (also manhwa reader) backing her up which made it harder for me to defend myself because my other fuckass friend just sat there 💔💔💔
