There really should be a way to hide your age

Back to Site Feedback
I was trying to poke around privacy settings and I couldn't find a way to do it without hiding your whole profile. I could just be missing something tbf

For me I mostly just don't want my exact age to be publicly visible/feel like it's is basic internet safety not to give your age, and I'm kind of surprised as far as I can tell that that's not a feature

adding to this as next day thoughts, it's also really dangerous for minors to give out their age and that's how minors get taken advantage of, especially if they're kids as young as 13. imo age should be automatically hidden for minors and only relevant if someone ticks off to not see content from minors, or minors shouldn't have their exact age be visible at all

I get it for people who don't want to make friends outside of their age group, but you could always not friend people who don't have a visible age and people can always put if they're an adult/minor in their bio, or maybe a toggle could be added

@𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 That hides it from the rendered page but it doesn't actually do anything to make it go away, it would be better if there was just an option to have something like >=18/<18 set as the public age instead.

@larpmaster5222 Personally, I feel like hiding your age could actually make things less secure. If you really think about it, keeping your age private might protect you, but it doesn't necessarily protect the people around you. How do I know I'm not talking to a minor, y'know? I also like knowing whether I'm interacting with another adult; someone I can have an adult conversation with, meet up with, or even enjoy a drink or two with.

I understand that hiding your age has its benefits, and there are certainly valid reasons for wanting to keep that information private. But it also comes with drawbacks, not just for you, but for everyone else you're interacting with. It's a matter of safety and transparency on both sides.

@𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 Yeah that's why I said an optional 18+/not 18+ thing would probably work best, either with or alongside hiding it outright. I also think that at least a larger amount of people who want to keep personal stuff hidden are probably not very interested in anything which would be strictly adult-only to begin with.

@𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 most places on the internet don't require age unless it's explicitly an 18+ space, and my rule of thumb is always to just play it safe and don't dm or talk about adult topics if I'm not sure about a person's age. a lot of adults put adult in their bio anyway that I think it's better to go by that than force people to give their exact age, especially when there's both the issue of groomers being able to target younger minors and age technically being personal information (I know it might be a paranoia thing, but I'd rather make it as hard as possible for people to reverse engineer my exact date of birth, I like having anonymity on the internet)

either way that was why I suggested having a way to just show minor/adult as a compromise, with the option to show exact age being a toggle

I'm brand new to the site so sorry either way if I don't have as much dog in this, my thought was mostly that it's a huge privacy concern to have age be always visible with no way to turn it off, I can't think of any site I've been on that had that without a way to turn it off unless it was specifically an 18+ site

@MATE I totally see what you're saying. I don't think that's a bad idea, but if we're going to attempt in protecting minors, I don't think we need a label that explicitly states "minor." Def3ct already ensured adults may not contact minors, so I personally feel like that should be a great clue to inform us adults, "hey, this person is a minor and you cannot interact with them," in hopes of trying to keep the children safe and us adults, too.

My suggestion would be to strip out minors' ages altogether rather than slapping a label on it. Because while yes, your age is being hidden, the label of you being a minor is still visible.
