I'm curious to see what everyone's opinion is on what makes someone a poser and what makes them actually alternative.
I'm curious to see what everyone's opinion is on what makes someone a poser and what makes them actually alternative.
They only follow trends and don't actually explore music for themselves, they buy alt fashion from SHEIN, Dollskill or other fast fashion and donate all their old clothes that don't match their new identity that they will no doubt swap for the next trend next year. Don't have any of their own views they just copy other people. The most annoying ppl in the alt scene rn r these trend hoppers
@xbittersweetsuicidex Yes, I aree!! I especially can't stand people who have no strong opinions of their own. If someone isn't willing to defend their political beliefs or aren't willing to stand up for oppressed groups of people, they aren't alternative. I hate people who say they can "understand both sides."
Things that make someone a poser:
just like everyone else already said, people that are only in the community because its whats popular at the moment, not because its a reflection of who they really are. they dont form a style that is unique to themselves nor have thoughts of their own, theyre a copy and paste of what everyone else is doing and saying since they dont have enough passion to make it their own, and then when the 'trend' dies down they'll leave and go to the next new thing.
buying fast fashion, promise that walking into a thrift store or logging onto depop/mercari isnt that hard.. you might even find yourself spending the same amount of money while benefiting the world..,.. aaahhhh whhaattt!!!!!..
and of course, if their core values dont align with what makes you apart of the community that theyre in
Nothing except not listening 2 the music or liking politics, nothings wrong with fast fashion
Poseur is used quite loosely these days, but I have a definition in mind.
To me, a poseur would be someone who participates in a subculture not out of an interest in said subculture, but out of a want to be either cool or niche. For instance, not being active in the music scene or solely listening to things that are trendy because they are trendy, not because they like it. It's different from a confused newbie, who actually is interested in said subculture, but is still learning the ropes and will get things confused (i.e thinking goth and emo are the same thing). A poseur has no actual interest.
That's the core definition to me.
being rightwing and calling other people posers for liking mainstream music as well as alt music
if they don't care about the music, politics, and lifestyle, only the fashion. the fashion is very important, yes, but the other components are what make that subculture and if u decide to ignore all of that, ur a fuckin poser!
Not following the politics of being alternative, I mean the actual politics. I understand if you're young but you should still know the basic faults of capitalism and show solidarity to your fellow working class. This also includes willing buying SHEIN/other fast fashion companies (wich are most of em) and now caring about the stuff their doing, being apathetic is the worst we can do and if you're alternative you should know it dude.
As others have said above, trendhoppers. Fer sure. People who don’t scratch beyond the surface level of a subculture, ppl who are in it for the “aesthetic” but label themselves as belonging to the subculture. Fashion is one thing, subculture is another that can sometimes entail fashion. You can look one way, but if you don’t know shit about the subculture and say ur a part of it, I will either assume ur a noob or a poser. No harm in being a noob, but usually, noobs won’t have a complete wardrobe makeover overnight with PR packages n shit.
On a similar note tho, people who try to police others on a subculture while not caring enough to look beyond what TikTok and insta have to say about said subculture. Not every alternative subculture is as clear-cut as punk or goth (the two big ones I see being represented online)—alternative means being against the norm and I feel that a lot of trendhoppers who would otherwise be unwelcome in a specific subculture try to redefine what that means to suit themselves when it comes to whatever new subculture is popular. Or, they try to obstruct people they don’t like from being a part of the subculture by making new rules.
(Of course, again, when ur new to a subculture that’s one thing, but when you claim to be a part of it for years…)
That is the biggest poser in my opinion. If you don’t know shit about it, dont be calling others posers and don’t be acting as if you’re more “alt” than someone else, because all “alt” subcultures are different from one another. “Altness” doesn’t transcend subculture boundaries, imo. It’s an umbrella.

Lmao sorry for the essay; tldr: trendhoppers and people who police others/make “altness” a competition whilst not knowing a subculture themselves
