Games are meant to be fun escapes from the horrors of everyday life, but sometimes they end up making you more miserable than before you started. Thats what I wanna hear about, whats your best story of a game absolutely pissing you off. It can be from a specific boss fight, a story moment, a fundamental piece of gameplay, glitches, or just hatred because. Nothing is too petty or small to matter.
For me the game that gets under my skin worse than any other is Fortnite. Now this isn’t just hating on something because its popular, I played Fortnite before the first crossovers ever happened, I was there when it blew up. And what has always frustrated me so much about the game is IT JUST TAKES FUCKING FOREVER FOR SHIT TO HAPPEN. THERE IS SO MUCH TIME WASTED, IN MENUS THAT GIVE YOU A BILLION ADS, WAITING TO THANK THE FUCKING BUS DRIVER, RUNNING AROUND GRABBING CRAP IN EMPTY HOUSES AND TOWNS. THEN WHEN 5 MINUTES LATER YOU ACTUALLY SEE A PERSON YOU EITHER KILL EM IN 2 SECONDS OR DIE IN 2 SECONDS. CONGRATS NOW YOU EITHER KEEP EXPLORING A BORING MAP UNTIL 10 MINUTES PASS AND YOU SEE ANOTHER HUMAN BEING OR YOU DIE AND HAVE TO WAIT THROUGH THE MENU AGAIN WHICH HAS SO MANY STIMULATING COLORS IT WOULD MAKE A CASINO BLUSH. IT IS BASICALLY REQUIRED TO HAVE ANOTHER SCREEN PRESENT WHILE PLAYING THE GAME BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH DOWN TIME WHERE NOTHING HAPPENS.
But if I just didn’t vibe with the gameplay, thats one thing, everyone has their own tastes and such. But what also helped in me absolutely being pissed off by the game existing is all the crossover stuff. While yes, maybe back in 2018 it was cool to see all the different characters and stuff that would join Fortnite, at the end of the day paying 20 dollars to play as fucking marty mcfly does make the game more fun. And yet that was the main thing that brought them success so of course they leaned into it. Now we have a game where the main draw it has is how many other things you like are in it. If that doesn’t interest you, there’s not much else to bring you in.
There is also the fomo aspect of the game, which again is nothing new to gaming, but Fortnite has some of the worst. First I don’t like how all the content from different events and seasons is basically locked away and lost forever. I unironically loved the spiderman gloves they had for a season, they were such a fun weapon to use and move around with. But after that season ended, gone. They give us toys and then take em away, even if everyone liked em. While its annoying, I could still get over it, but its not the only element of fomo in the game. The battlepass system basically says to you, “if you’re not playing the game everyday, you’re never ever gonna get the cool stuff you want, it will be gone forever.” While its not that cut and dry(stuff comes back in the shops or in other seasons etc) that really is the message it sends to people unconsciously, and why I think it was such a successful system. People wanna play as their favorite characters, even if they don’t really love the gameplay of something they still love the characters, and will do anything to play as them. But for me, being told to play a game every day, by the game itself, really gets under my skin.
If the game had boring gameplay fine. If it had crossover micro transactions stuff, fine. If it had fomo stuff fine. But having all three? FUCK THIS FUCKIN GAME.
