Since I can't video call on here and would like to with my friends without being on a greedy platform, I'm looking for some alternatives to discord. I want the most popular or best one ofc, maybe Matrix?

XMPP is the only one that both actually works and respects user freedom. Sadly calling functionality is still in early stages but there is active work going on to improve it. Matrix is complete ass and I wouldn't bother with it.
