Avowed?

Back to Games

I'm curious if anyone else on this site has played Avowed, the Pillars of Eternity game that came out last year!! I played it and loved it, but it's so hard finding other fans of Avowed specifically lol I'd never heard of Pillars of Eternity before then (still haven't played another of the other games, oops) but saw content about one of the main companions being voiced by Brandon Keener, and as a huge Mass Effect fan I was sold immediately. god it's such a fun game and the companions are so awesome

Generally, people did not like Avowed for a wide variety of reasons. Mostly being that it didn't have many of the expected features of a "sandbox exploration RPG", like many of Obsidian's other projects like Fallout: New Vegas or Outer Worlds. An RPG where shooting people in a town with an arrow does nothing, city guards not responding to enemy invasion, or NPCs standing around in short animation loops turned people off from the game greatly.

Not to mention, the game was largely borked on release with half of players not being able to turn their camera to the left for some reason or another. The equipment upgrade system, while unique, was not enjoyed. Needless to say, you'll be hard pressed to find fans of Avowed.

The combat in the game was surprisingly good all things considered, but the game needed at least 2 more years of polish. Real shame because I like Pillars of Eternity.

@SoaringMoon That's definitely an opinion. Personally I'm a big fan of Mass Effect so I don't mind any of those "negatives" you just listed lmao. If you want to play Outer Worlds then you can go play Outer Worlds, but I don't need every RPG to be a copy+paste of those kinds. I thought Avowed had a very interesting story with a lot of paths to take, none of which needed to include killing townsfolk, the same way I don't march Commander Shepard onto the Citadel and start shooting up the place. Just because the game could let you kill random NPCs doesn't mean it should, Avowed isn't marketed as a sandbox and there'd be no reason to add things like that just for the sake of having them.

@x_v4mp3y3lin3r_x Obsidian didn't develop Mass Effect, so I wouldn't expect an Obsidian developed game to be like Mass Effect. Obsidian did develop the other games it was compared too, and when it didn't have those same features it looked like a lazy and lower quality product in comparison.

People weren't mad because it is was lacking features that don't exist in other games. They were mad because it was
lacking features they expected from the developer who's other games they've purchased.

Avowed isn't marketed as a sandbox

It is very difficult to detach a game's identity from its developer.
I've colored Obsidian's Games by their level of sandbox gameplay.
