any social work/human services workers/majors here?

Back to General Discussion

just figured i’d ask since i’m currently majoring in social work. not entirely sure on what field i’d like to work in because there’s a lot that interest me (clinical social work and child welfare to name a couple). feel free to talk about your experience!

Mine doesn't count (I think) but I did have to go through plenty of psychology, interpersonal communication and classes that required me to understand human and child development for Emergency Communications & Response certificate/degree!!

I have to deal and help those who are in need of help during the worst time of their lives and honestly during my time in university and field placement (job shadowing kinda), I had to hear people in their most traumatic moments which took a toll on me and my mental health! had to work on it and realize that this is what I am gonna get into and I am possibly going to get used to it because these people are human beings and they require my help and services no matter what I may be thinking or going through :)

I really do respect people who have to put in the work and take care of those who are most vulnerable like children, public and those with mental health issues/disorders!

I hope everyone that are trying to get into these roles do a great job and help the community/public!

@bunnibun7 I’d say what you did sounds like it counts as human services! I’ve had to take psychology classes as well and a communications class. I deeply respect people who do crisis work, that’s some very rough stuff and you have to be very strong for that.

@steven

Thank you!! That's really sweet of you to say :) Always building resilience and learning to do so really helps with this kind of work!

im in a similar field and honestly idk if i like it cuz some of my classes are great and address the system that creates all the suffering that we then have to help ppl thu, but then there are classes that are like all about how to enforce the system and is absically just "this is how u uphold the system and if u dont do that u wont get a job" so it's like they want us to help ppl who are most effected by the oppresive systems we live in but then they also want us to be part of the system and im not sure if i can get behind that last part...

@AL<3 oof yeah, probation is a big one where you have to uphold systemic issues since you’re technically working in law enforcement. As much as I’m passionate about social work, I would NOT want to go into probation for that reason. There are social workers who try to keep people AWAY from police officers/protect them from law enforcement and I can strongly support that. It’s very unfortunate. You should be helping people, not making their lives worse.

@steven   exactly! and the fact that they make it part of the same proffession is so iffy to me cuz like how can u be there to help someone if ur working with the system oppressing them, y'know? it really made me unsure of it this is the path i wanna go down but unfortunately anti-system activism doesn't pay and almost always needs to be a side gig so i need to find some other proffession that i can do to survive but also i just can't do stuff that goes agaisnt my morals and unfortuantely that cancels out most proffessions for me and i thought this was different but i guess not...

@AL<3 thankfully anti-system activism is actually a big part of social work here in america! But yeah, it’s very unfortunate how a lot of jobs won’t hire you if you don’t conform. It makes me very frustrated.
