A Phoneless Society is a Great One!

Back to General Discussion

I hate modern phones. Maybe, I'm looking at it though a biased view. Yes, I understand modern phones help people with accessibility issues, I have a disabled aunt who is able to eat without leaving her house thanks to apps offering grocery delivery, people can talk to their family from overseas, and I will admit, I think blind people getting help from AI to see is such an amazing advancement in tech that will help thousands, but should AI really be implemented for everyone to use? I stopped using my phone completely after seeing a fruit love island video on my tiktok, and it made me stop and rethink my whole life. I have been using a flip phone since the beginning of this year but made the full switch to just my flip phone after that. I started to think, why and I renting music? why am I scrolling for hours instead of doing anything else? Why am I allowing my depression to get worse by scrolling and seeing AI slop and trump? And why am I not the only one being affected by this yet no one else seems to wake up? So here it is, a wake up call to anyone who cares. FIGHT BACK! our kids can't read, we have a distorted view of ourselves thanks to filters, we are overconsuming at such a high level that our earth can't keep up, we are killing ourselves by using AI, and dumbing and numbing ourselves to the real world by scrolling!

I don't really think its phones but the fact that things lack substance. People's attention spans are cooked, and like you said ai slop 🙄. But now that you've mentioned it I should decrease my screen time, I could be so much more productive with my time. However I can't complete switch to a flip phone due to my career

That's why I love sites like this so much. And being on a site like this gives me hope for the future, cause its so intentional and you actually have to read and interact with people

@Jamz💋 you're right because its a part of the internet in general. thanks for the correction. and yes I hope you can get your cleanse. its so much better for your mental health!

i wholeheartedly agree, ive been using the tcl flip 4 for about two months now as my daily driver and i never wanna go back to using a smartphone. my screen time was off the wall, im talking 8-10 hours a day doomscrolling. getting a flip phone was the best decision i ever made this year, i got so sick of the internet and ai and always hearing bad news. feeling bored and uninterested in my hobbies and even going out. since i switched ive picked up reading again, going out more, just feeling better and more in control of myself. not like a zombie

@Carbokikrits THIS!!! also I have been using a tcl phone as well!

@Cravaings  yess its such a good phone! i even got a case for it, maybe ill get a keychain too lolol, the only thing that sucks is being unable to use banking apps or cash apps, but i just use my old phone for that stuff when i need too.

@Carbokikrits yes thats another thing, you used to be able to tell someone's personality in films. like sharpay's bedazzled phone in HSM but now everyone holds the same brick

@Cravaings exactly, i miss when phones where all different, sliders, flips, ones that could twist,  in all diff colors too,  modern phones suckkkk

I think one of the big problems with modern phones is that we've gotten away from what a phone originally was: a tool. Our phones now are made to be leashes first, and tools second.

I do like being  able to communicate with my family and friends easily, but you're correct, we would be --broadly speaking-- better off with simpler forms of communication, and not having these surveillance computers in our pockets.

It's definitely the algorithms of social media. You used to be stopped from scrolling by a capped algorithm, but now we're stuck on an endless loop of whatever we want. While I adore watching One Direction edits on Tiktok, my attention span has taken such a hit that I can't even read a book anymore. Currently, I'm saving up for a Cats22. Mainly because it has Spotify and I cannot live without my music, and it seems like an easier transition.

@lilybell you should get a mp3 player instead of using spotify. its so much cheaper

@Cravaings oh i'm totally looking for one but every one i find ends up having terrible reviews. i'll probably end up dropping $200 on an ipod if i decide to go that route.
