"Director Cut Albums"

Back to Music

So recently I've noticed some artists releasing new albums but they are called director cut albums. Now I'm not a musician or an artist. I'm just a music enjoyer. So whenever I see one of my favorite artists dropping a "directors cut" album, I'm like "ouuuuu okay extra songs." But these two artists ( I don't want to call them out), released director cut albums.. but it's the album they released a couple of months ago + 2 other songs. But one of the 2 songs they released as a single a couple of weeks before the directors cut got released. So from a music enjoyers point of view it feels like they released 1 new song.

Anyways the point of this post are, what is the purpose of director cut albums? I understand if we were doing CDs and Vinyls it would make sense to put them all together as a collectors edition. But if you are just releasing them to spotify, then what would be the purpose? Why not just release two singles? After thinking about it all day at work, it probably comes down to more streams = more money???? But it just kind of stumped me.

I mean maybe it makes sense for the people who like to have spotify in album mode, but I'm one of those people who just shuffle my liked songs and don't use any other feature hahaha. So whenever I predownload albums it just feels like I have two of the same songs (1 from the actual album and 1 from the directors cut or 1 from the single and the directors cut).
