The Stupendium

“In every level you beat and each boss battle defeat

With each achievement your view becomes a bit more complete

And with each twist that unfolds and every mystery you solve

We find a new way to see this ball on which we revolve

These games have secrets inside and

As a team, we can find them.

You've a blank page and a clear horizon

So why not do a little theorizing?”

“Nothing lasts, everything fades

And every day, you are picking a pigment to place on the cavas life paints so why choose grey?

In the gallery of your time, you cannot always choose the pictures, but you can choose how they are depicted. And they will always be hung in your frame of mind.

So smile.

But it’s okay to be sad.

Blue is in the rainbow for a reason and it has some of the shortest wavelengths. Because there’s never enough time to say goodbye.

Everyone’s song ends.

But how we crescendo is not as important as the harmonies we left in our friends.

You don’t get to go back.

You just get to look.

So make sure that the pictures you took are as colourful as they can be.”

“And we’ll do a lot of learning on the way, the gears are churning so just turn another page

Whoever said that work should be impervious to play never learned to peek behind the curtain of the games”

Steam Powered Giraffe

“I’m about to pick you up, get you back up on your feet

You don’t need to worry, love, even if we’re incomplete

Come on baby, open up, pull out the wires and trim the fluff

Be yourself, sounds so cliché but, hey, let’s do it anyway.”

Jean Piaget

“That is why empiricism is destined to arise perpetually from its ashes and to play its useful role of antagonist of a priori interpretations. But the whole problem is to find out how the environment experts its action and how the subject records the data of experience.

It is on this point that the facts demand departure from associationism.”

Danielle Navarro

Why do you do statistics? Why don’t scientists just use common sense?

It’s a naive question in some ways, but most good questions are. There’s a lot of good answers to it, but for my money, the best answer is a really simple one: we don’t trust ourselves enough.

We worry that we’re human, and susceptible to all of the biases, temptations and frailties that humans suffer from. Much of statistics is basically a safeguard. Using “common sense” to evaluate evidence means trusting gut instincts, relying on verbal arguments and on using the raw power of human reason to come up with the right answer.

Most scientists don’t think this approach is likely to work.

In fact, come to think of it, this sounds a lot like a psychological question to me, and since I do

work in a psychology department, it seems like a good idea to dig a little deeper here.

Is it really plausible to think that this “common sense” approach is very trustworthy? Verbal arguments have to be constructed in language, and all languages have biases – some things are harder to say than others, and not necessarily because they’re false (e.g., quantum electrodynamics is a good theory, but hard to explain in words).

The instincts of our “gut” aren’t designed to solve scientific problems, they’re designed to handle day to day inferences – and given that biological evolution is slower than cultural change, we should say that they’re designed to solve the day to day problems for a different world than the one we live in.

Most fundamentally, reasoning sensibly requires people to engage in “induction”, making wise guesses and going beyond the immediate evidence of the senses to make generalisations about the world.”

“The world loves you just as much as you love it. If anything, I love you.”

“The only high class that will do anything to help is the highest class that cares, and that just so happens to be us.”

“If you want to help those kids, you have to take care of you.

You Are one.”

“As soon as it had a name, it had a focal point from which to attack it from. And then I was like: If it’s a disease, quote unquote, then it has a cure! You know? But when it was just like this nameless thing hanging over my life it was just really really tough.

That’s why I tell people, like, don’t be scared to like, go to therapy. Like, don’t think of it as like, a sign of weakness to like, ask for help if you’re feeling sad […]”

Sean William McLaughlin

“This is the beauty of video games, as a medium. It actually, like, put that into practicality. […] You’re actually play that out. […] No other medium could do that but a video game. And that’s why I love video games. Very few games have been able to.. what’s the word I’m looking for? Translate that to reality.”

“All of you have got diverse voices. Different voices, but all of them important voices. Voices the world need to know.

Voices that can make a change in the upheaval, in the chaos tat we see in the world. Friends, my last words to you is this:

Walk out that door.

Keep those voices, and ensure that they make the change in the world that you want to see.”

Games

Undertale and Deltarune

“You called out for help, but nobody came.”

“No one can choose who they are in this world.”

Danganronpa

“No! That’s wrong!”

“A waste, huh…

I see, it would be a waste.

Yes, we shouldn’t be wasteful.”

“When a life ends, the closest to it mourn. But if you could somehow recycle that life…

Then those closest to it wouldn’t need to mourn anymore, right?

If we could recycle life, the world would be filled with hope. That’s my point.”

“How will you live a life that faces death?”

“Even if it’s fiction, everyone wants to feel hope… It gives them courage.”

Minecraft

“Words make a powerful interface. Very flexible. And less terrifying than staring at the reality behind the screen.

[…]

They used to hear voices. Before players could read. Back in the days when those who did not play called the players witches, and warlocks.

[…]

Hah, the original interface. A million years old, and it still works. But what true structure did this player create, in the reality behind the screen?

It worked, with a million others, to sculpt a true world in a fold of the [REDACTED], and created a [REDACTED] for [REDACTED], in the [REDACTED].

It cannot read that thought.

[…]

Sometimes when they are deep in dreams, I want to tell them, they are building true worlds in reality. Sometimes I want to tell them of their importance to the universe. Sometimes, when they have not made a true connection in a while, I want to help them to speak the word they fear.

[…]

And yet they play the game.

[…]

I will not tell the player how to live.

[…]

I will tell the player a story.

But not the truth.

No. A story that contains the truth safely, in a cage of words.

[…]

Give it a body, again.

[…]

Use its name.

[…]

You are the player, reading words…

[…]

You. You. You are alive.

[…]

You are the player.

Wake Up.”
