Ka10rah's Interests

General

"What I Like to Do: Far traveling; reading; writing; having extremely long and elegant meals in exotic restaurants with good company; arguing; seeing endless movies; cuddling; shooting pool; visiting art exhibitions and trying to restrain myself from buying; buying; laughing at myself; laughing at others; but most of all, loafing around with friends and interesting strangers, talking about the world, which is filled with a great many things. I must confess I find golf and tennis and suchlike activities a thundering bore. Chess is pleasant, because conversations can be carried on while playing...but backgammon and going to hockey games fills me with a vast ennui. I find that the only thing worth the time and energy is the company of others; people are my business and I cannot conceive of ever having discovered all there is to discover about the human heart in conflict with itself (as Faulkner put it) would much rather of eyer having discovered all there is to discover about the human sit and talk to someone than alienate myself by watching a ballgame.

Special Interests: All the usual good things: music, art, sociology, literature. But, again, people. One evening in the company of a Carl Sagan or a Buck- minster Fuller or a Louise Nevelson is worth 10,000 years of running around a handball court. Because I'm a writer, my curiosity about all manner of minutiae has led me to learn about such diverse subjects as cartography, Latin American literature, Jack the Ripper, top security in toy factories, Egyptian sexual mores, quasars as manifestations of giant Black Holes, art deco of the Thirties, jazz, the psychopathology of bigotry, H.L. Mencken, geology...there isn't nearly enough time in the day to learn all I want to know. I've written books of mystery stories, science fiction, fantasy, tv criticism, juvenile delinquency; books about the world of rock music, jails, kid gangs, high society, the underworld. I've been to Brazil and England, Australia and France, Scotland and Canada's frozen north, all across the States, and into far, strange lands where no one else has ever been. Special enough?"

-  Harlan Ellison

Music

I am interested in all forms of music, and defining music to simply interest in a few genres is redundant to music itself. Sound is the way humanity connects with one another, as has always been since neanderthals and far before then, vibrations of the universe tying us to one another. Music is passion given form, blood pumps to the rhythm of song and syncs our very essence with one another. Of course, not all music is of such quality, listening to poorly made slop has no soul and places me in the doldrums. Music has always been a factor in my work, many of my writings derived from the feelings conjured in my soul through song. Humanity has this uncanny ability to feel the very essence of the other. Touching in a sense beyond touch. Its a wonderful thing. Its really quite engrossing to listen to music from cultures other than my own, understanding how the instruments and song change with the culture, the place, and the feeling. It, in simplicity, is enjoyed with a fine wine and good company; in which you all can simply connect with one another.

Movies

I am, as with my other interests, open to any and all forms of media, though admittedly I have a preference to psychological horror. I believe it is the complete and rawest exemplar of the human experience, and I enjoy them very much.

Television

I'm not much of a fan of common television, however I do enjoy certain game shows. Tipping point; Have you been paying attention?;  and most things regarding the gardening channel. That is in regards to "free to air" TV. I'd much rather shows and series' and decent length movies.

Books

I am a good enjoyer of a wide range of books, and am of the firm belief that you cannot be a good writer if you've not consumed just as well. I have been down many a mental rabbit hole in pursuit of knowledge found in a good book. In truth the literacy crisis is saddening but not entirely unexpected. Humans are slothful creatures in nature, and would put in more effort to automate something rather than to actually do the task, and in doing so have lost the power to simply sit down and to do something. By this i am referring directly to generative artificial intelligence. I despise the thing. Despite my mecca towards allied mastercomputer, generative AI fills me with immense repulsion. Human literature is something to be cherished and nourished; in all of its forms, not to be plucked and fried like a pheasant to feed the machine.

Heroes

Phrasing anyone like a saviour is redundant, though if I must acquiesce I would have to say Harlan Ellison.

Games

Games, of all, have to be my absolute favourite simply for how vast the range is of games to be played. Tabletop; online; singleplayer; puzzles; even hand games are all enjoyable to me when in good company. In truth good company can make or break an evening, even the simplest of games and novelties in themselves can be treasured in the midst of interesting people.
