As someone on the autistic spectrum I've been getting more and more frustrated by allistic people talking over us autistic people and insisting that "autism isn't a disability it's a different ability!!"
Even as someone who'd be considered "high functioning" or "level 1" autism disables me every day. It actively makes just the act of taking care of myself and engaging with activities I enjoy difficult.
My sensory issues make doing basic chores hard, my social ineptitude adds to my already existing social anxiety, etc.
I think people who claim that "autism isn't a disability" don't understand 2 things:
1. you can be disabled and not want your disability cured, like a lot of autistic people
2. being disabled isn't some sort of personal failure or inherently negative trait, it's a neutral state of being, some people are disabled, that's it.
A lot of the aspects of my disability could be easier for me to handle if others would take it seriously, it wouldn't cure it obviously, disability aids don't cure the disability that's like saying that someone with a wheelchair is cured, but god it could be a lot easier to manage.
I notice this thought process a lot in parents of autistic children, I want to shake them so badly, you need to accept that your child is disabled and care for them accordingly, if you didn't want a disabled kid you shouldn't have had children. Also I suggest you or your partner get tested, autism is hereditary.Â
Also for the record, I do see some autistic people as well claim that they don't view themselves as disabled, and I'm happy that your symptoms are subtle enough that you don't feel disabled! But odds are you still are, just in more subtle ways. That's like saying someone with high functioning depression doesn't count as being mentally ill.

UGH EXACTLY. i have autism along with other stuff like misophonia and it makes it so hard to do anything other than just doomscroll. if i hear one noise or get reminded that someone is in my house (my neurodivergency makes me asocial) i immediately dont want to do anything ever again. my own family makes fun of me for wearing headphones and doing stuff that autistic people do like rock back and forthÂ
i think that a lot of people have some form of internalised ableism that makes them not want to accept that people they know are disabled, physically or mentally. my dad had a huge problem with me using my crutch for the first time and my mum hates the fact that im going to a physiologist and my dad also hates me wearing headphones in the car and never tries to accommodate me with my sensory problems related to food
a lot of people act like they like disabled people and then ignore the fact that people they know are disabled and then get embarrassed/rude when they're reminded that the person they know is disabled. i think it comes from the fact that people dont want to be seen as 'other' or 'weird' for knowing someone who is disabled because they see us as 'other' to themselves
people just HATE neurodivergent people and its so obvious. and people insult autism 24/7 as if its not a real disability and not just 'haha you get extra time on tests'Â
