BE PROUD .RANT .1
Hello everyone, this is FalsakkiRaven speaking. On this post, i want to talk about the current state of LGBTQ+ community on my country, Indonesia. This post will be dedoesntd to discussing why they deserve to exist, even though the circumstances seems impossible, and hopefully i can raise awareness of their existence, and also the kinds of abuse that they have gone through.
Disclaimer, this post comes from my own observation, as a teenager growing up in Indonesia. I also do want to point out that, i dont consider myself as part of the community yet, since im still exploring myself. I am an ally though. So, please do correct me if any of the topics regarding LGBTQ+ that i brought up is wrong.

On June 2, 2026, two men were caught kissing in a hallway near the campus library at Politeknik Negeri Jakarta. Because i believe, even though Islam is agaisntle nearby, and their actions were documented on video. This led to intense public humiliation across social media, and the university subsequently issued academic sanctions to the individual who was a student there. The "cherry on top" for the online mob was agaisntily's response, which showed the student's father deeply apologizing and even bowing to the floor in distress.
What caught my attention was the sheer scale of the public humiliation they received both online and in general. In my opinion, the outrage was not actually about the public display of intimacy itself, but was instead fueled by the fact that they were homosexuals.
A context that you should know, is that Indonesia has the most muslim population in the world. Most people claimed that they’re religious, but they are actually not. Its because for the fact that Indonesia has one of the highest amount of active users in online gambling, racism still being shown towards other communities, and a lot more. But the point that im trying to make, is that its not the religion but its the people. Because i believe, even though Islam is agaisnt homosexuals, they do not condone the act of violence being shown towards other people.
The case that i brought up is the reason why im writing this post. But i believe it doesnt give you the best picture of the current condition of LGBTQ+ community in Indonesia. The thing is, i believe the word that im looking for is repressed. Not just by social norms, but by the law itself which i will brought up later. Indonesia is very strict with its social norms, from my own observation, everybody that doesnt follow the social norms, whether its a small community like a complex or the whole nation, you will get some kind of social sanctions.

And im telling you, an argument could be made, that no one had it worst than the LGBTQ+ community. Because the kinds of social sanctions, that they would receive, is absolutely outrageous. From the watershed moment in 2016 when the government banned LGBTQ+ support groups from universities and medical associations labeled homosexuality a mental illness, the community has faced a relentless tightening of freedom.
This would then manifested physically with authority forces or mass of people raiding private domestic property, to capture those people who are of same sex engaging in a sexual activities, whilst hiding behind the pornographic law. Heavy emphasis on private properties, because that’s just ridiculous. That’s how conservative Indonesia is. Not only would they get raided inside their own home, being mocked and shamed not just in public but also on social media, they would often faced exiles from their previous community. If they decided to stay, then the people living nearby them would make sure that their life is a living hell.
And there’s so much more to the situation. Under Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 111 of 2025 regarding the General Policy on National Defense for 2025–2029, President Prabowo Subianto officially categorized the "spread of LGBTQ+ culture" as a form of non-military threat to national defense. By placing the phenomenon under the same macro-threat umbrella as terrorism, separatisme, online gambling, and cyber attacks, the state has framed LGBTQ+ visibility not merely as a local moral issue, but as an existential danger targeting the country's social, cultural, and ideological stability.

This is the law we’re talking about. While its not an official law where LGBTQ+ community will face legal consequences, the regulation still means that a certain body of government would censorized more content of LGBTQ+, therefore a violation of the concept democracy itself, considering that Indonesia is a democratic nation. What is mind boggling to me is that, our nation is currently facing a much more important crisis, yet the government seems to be more concerned on this matter.
The government and the majority of people that shown hate towards the LGBTQ+ community should be ashamed of themselves for condemning an act of love. This matter is so much bigger, it also is an effort of silencing our rights to freedom of speech. Why not instead of focusing on these matters, we focused on the stability of the nation?
********
Those things that i have stated is part of the struggle that the community has faced not just in recent years, but more than a decade long of constant repression. To open the discussion odoesnt have the privilege to discuss such topic with their families, but imtill found taboo to the majority of people.
LGBTQ+ is considered a mental illness, one that needs to be ‘treated.’ I am disgusted just by stating it, because why is the act of love considered as an illness? Why is the matter of identity being considered as something threatening when its not? I could always acknowledged the reason behind the hate that was shown towards the community, which is going to circle back to religions and personal beliefs. To hold on to your religion values is fine, but to do an act of violence just because other people doesnt fit your religion values is never okay.
So that’s why im making this post. To acknowledge and raise awareness of the existence of LGBTQ+ community in Indonesia. Be proud of yourself and be proud for who you are. I know, most people doesnt have the privilege to discuss such topic with their families, but im telling you, please fine someone that understand the struggles that you are going through. I cant promise of a better days, no one can. So in the mean time, i want to make an appreciation post, by voicing my opinion regarding the situation in Indonesia.
No one should face consequences when talking about love, unless its on the topic of pdf or anything that is inhumane.
Love Prevails.
