Being into neofolk as someone who’s transgender, a leftist, and Native American

So, neofolk is one of my favorite music genres. This includes artists such as Death In June, Current 93, Fire + Ice, Backworld, Nature and Organisation, and many others. Most people know neofolk as “Nazi music” because of the fact that, realistically, a lot of neofolk fans are Nazis and members of the far-right. I find it ironic considering Douglas P. is incredibly openly gay and the official Death In June Facebook group will ban bigots. Anyways, I’m only into neofolk for the way the music sounds because I love folk music. For Death In June, I’m especially drawn to the gay themes. Apparently, this makes me a tourist, meanwhile Douglas would have a rainbow flag on display during a lot of his concerts.

I actually run a neofolk shitpost page on Instagram and have gotten a lot of people pissed off at me or making fun of me because I’m transgender, specifically a transgender man. I’ve also pissed off people for being staunchly left-wing. I’ve been called a tourist. I also honestly experienced little transphobia until I started interacting with the neofolk community. As a neofolk enjoyer, I do like pissing off neofolk fans because of how elitist and bigoted a lot of them are. I could count the amount of times I’ve been called slurs on both my hands. I’ve also been fetishized/objectified by neonazis. 

Then, there is also me being Native American, which clashes with the fact a lot of neofolk fans are very passionate about the concept of “saving Europa” and are, well, neonazis that believe in the supremacy of Europeans/white people. I actually do know some fellow Indigenous neofolk fans, but we are small in numbers. I recently encountered a neofolk fan who’s also Oglala Lakota, which is my tribe. While I do appreciate certain things about Europe and do also have European heritage, I am more proud of my Indigenous heritage and take Europe’s history of colonization very seriously. As a Native American, I hold even more vitriol for neonazis and those who are proud of colonization. After all, I live in the United States which was founded on stolen land after my people were massacred. When I encounter neofolk fans and neofolk musicians who piss and shit themselves over Europe having immigrants who are people of color, I can’t help but laugh. It’s 2026, get over it. 

So, yeah. Being a neofolk enjoyer with these traits has put a bounty on my head in some ways, but I don’t care about it too much since I only like neofolk for the music and I honestly don’t even listen to that many neofolk artists. Bigoted morons can complain all they want over someone like me simply just listening to music. I’m not going to stop listening to Death In June just because hitlerlover69420 is calling me a troon and a pooner for existing as myself. It’s idiotic.
