okay, so if you've been engaging with visual novel fans on twitter for a while you probably began noticing how they engage with translated works. the way the talk about people who read translated works does come off as being pretentious because, well, it is! but, the differences between how book readers and visual novel readers engage with translations is quite interesting because they heavily contradict one another despite both mediums having a focus on reading.
book readers are pretty open to translations and localizations, going as far as to choose specific translators that they will read from. they will have discussions about which person translated a book the best or the worst, which translator is better and so and so forth. there's pretty much a whole sub-community of readers debating translations.
meanwhile, you can't really find that energy in visual novel spaces. there's always some air of pretentiousness as i mentioned before. to be honest, this is why i don't really engage with many visual novel readers because they're always so desperate to come off as "niche" or to seem superior than the others. visual novel readers are pretty much the opposite of book readers, i don't think i've met a community that detests translations more than anyone else. i've yet to see the reason why they hate translations and localizations so much.Â
