Hello friends,
I just wanted to come on here and rant for a moment about some things in the news that have been really getting to me lately.
So, for context- I started getting involved in environmental activism when I was 15. I founded the Utah chapter of Fridays For Future, I gave speeches in front of thousands of people at protests and concerts and conferences and stuff, I taught workshops to high school students, I was on TV and live radio multiple times talking about environmental stuff, there are still news articles online about my work, etc. I literally poured my entire soul into activism. One of the reasons I got my GED as a sophomore instead of graduating normally was so that I could spend more time working on climate change projects.
Well, it's been 8 years. Our main goal that we were fighting for was to prevent 1.5C of warming by the 2030 tipping point, but since then it's only gotten worse. Significantly worse. 1.5C of warming is CATASTROPHIC, and we're just about there already, with the only forward motion being towards MORE warming. We're now expected to hit that 1.5C tipping point, which will cause exponential warming and put us at 3C of warming by 2050- DOUBLE the catastrophic tipping point of 1.5C. The climate crisis has already killed 4 million people since the year 2000, what will the death toll be in 2050?
Over the years I've become less involved with environmental activism as I've worked on other projects like BLM, Palestine, Roe V Wade, etc. But recently the climate crisis has been thrown into sharp relief for me. I live in Utah, where wildfires have been ravaging the state this summer. In 2026 we've had 1,030 fires so far, burning 553,155 acres. In the last 24 hours, 26 fires have started. The Bonneville Fire was in a place I've been a thousand times. After it was put out, my friend and I went and hiked around. Being surrounded by miles of blackness, everything burned, was very surreal. It felt spiritual. You know the quote "climate change will manifest as a series of disasters that you watch on a phone screen until you are the one filming it"? Yeah. But in my mind I was screaming "I told you! I told you this would happen! But nobody listened to me!" We've also lost a few firefighters and fire retardant helicopter pilots this year fighting the fires.
On my way to work I smelled burning. I looked over and saw 10 acres of burned land, through the park I once walked with my then-boyfriend. On the hour long train ride to school, I looked out the window. I saw 8 different patches of burned land. We broke our state record for woodland forest lost to fires, and for buildings lost to fires.
When we aren't on fire, we're flooding. We lost almost an entire family to a flash flood recently. Last week, my best friend and I went to go walk our favorite trail. When we got there, we couldn't find it. The flooding had not only washed the trail away, but broke 2 giant (like I can crawl through them) pipes at the base of it. We climbed up to where the trail should have been, and about 20 feet later, I looked around. Everything black, just like when I hiked Bonneville. Before it flooded, it burned. Again, in my head all I could think about was how hard I worked and how dedicated I was, all the hate, bullying, disrespect, and threats I received. Every panic attack before a speech or presentation. Every panic attack before a live news segment. Every hour, every minute, every day for years being solely dedicated to preventing climate disaster. And here we are, worse off then when I started. The Bo Burnham song Inside rips me apart nowadays. "You say the ocean's rising, like I give a shit. You say the whole world's ending, honey it already did. You're not gonna slow it, heaven knows you tried."
Today, a melting glacier collapsed, causing the most insane and terrifying floods I have ever seen in my life. Entire buildings swallowed, not because the waves swept them away by their foundations, but because the waves were larger than the buildings. 390 people are confirmed dead, and over 1,400 are still missing.
Anyway, thanks for reading if you made it this far. I'll insert some links and stuff below. i appreciate that you care, and I'm sorry we ended up here. Much love. <3
