Hi! I saw your account as soon as it came out, as well as your post on layouts but I couldn't really help since I've just signed up too.. anyways, I feel like this is really becoming a problem!! I also like being childish, I like collecting small things, picking shells off the beach, sometimes studying some random topic I find fun and I LOVE going on a walk or studying with friends, but those things are becoming less possible as I get older and it genuinely makes me feel like I'm lacking something in my life because of it. One example of this was exam season, I was walking with my friend to her house because we needed to study and she had previously asked for my help on a specific topic so I offered to help- while we were walking I was looking around at the trees and the houses and having fun with that but mostly trying to talk to her, not even necessarily about the studying, just to reconnect after a while. The issue with this was that she was on Snapchat, talking to some random guy she met online, trying to impress him, hiding eho it was from me, and she said not a word to me that wasn't related to getting me to go away the entire time. Even when we got there, we pulled out our books (relieving considering they were really heavy and we were lugging them all the way bavk) and she wouldn't listen to me, even trying to help HER study. This isn't the only time this has happened with friends either, even in larger groups there always comes a point where everyone in the group (including me at times, I'm also really bad with this) is attached to their phone, more focused on putting up their status of what they're doing instead of enjoying it. It's childish of me to be upset, but maybe that's what I miss. I miss being able to be childish with someone or alone, and it not be documented for the world or not paid attention to at all in favor of a phone. I'm not as good with vocabulary as you, and I certainly don't have the same way with words, but I felt like this post was a good place to express my grievance- sorry if this was too long!!

Iโ€™m really glad I found someone who can relate to thjs situation so well, I thought I was being dramatic a few minutes after I posted this ! I donโ€™t view technology to be inherently malicious , yet , Iโ€™ve honestly noticed a pattern where parents are giving internet access to young kidsโ€”as young as 3! At that age, youโ€™d need to enhance their imagination by connecting them to the outside world!ย

Iโ€™m okay with replies being lengthy. I enjoy pushing myself to read longer paragraphs. Attention span and all of that :p Thanks for your sincere thoughts

+ what you said about people talking about the moment and not living in it is a really nice observation .. reminds me of that moment in fahrenheit 451 where clarisse talks about people knowing what cows are but not what they look like their fast driving makes everything blur as opposed to driving where you really get to absorb everything

Omg I read Fahrenheit too!! I can see that, especially with that thing where all the billboards were extremely stretched out so people could see them while they drove quickly- it feels like the world is expanding to always be entertaining- which is good! But what isn't good is how estranged we are to boredom now. If distraction becomes the norm, when will we focus or come up with and act on a new idea? I agree that technology isn't inherently evil, but the way we use it becomes something to avoid after a certain point
