Hey! I'm so sorry you're going through this. Relationships are complicated and so are people. Sometimes people change their minds or direction on life, and sometimes it seems to come out of no where but they may have been thinking about it for a while. I will say, your feelings are completely valid, and you're valid in any path you take when it comes to your future relationship with this person. If it be friendship, acquittance, or partner; any form of relationship with them is valid. You're valid to feel hurt, and I can see how you are hurt.

If you want a recommendation from someone whose much older and went through the whole high school relationship debacle, I recommend maybe telling them that you are taking a step back from being their friend. You don't have to tell them you like them, you don't have to tell them why, just say "hey I'm taking a step back from our friendship, it isn't anything you did, there is no bad blood, I just need some me time and I will reach back out when I am ready to continue our friendship". Now I will note, this could hurt them, and it will, because to them it will feel like they are losing a friend. But reassuring them that you will reach back out when you're ready, and that it isn't that they didn't do anything wrong would bring them peace and reassurance.

That would be my recommendation on how to handle the situation and move forward. I hope you heal and I hope that whatever happens, you BOTH end up happy!!! Your happiness is also important don't forget that!
