Times are always changing. People have always conformed, styles have always evolved, changed, adjusted, returned. I'd like to pay devils advocate here by challenging your worldview. Why is a white wall, or long lashes, considered basic and what do you define as maximalist? I could argue that people who need to have many items to showcase their interests to others is simply consumerist and sheep-like. I don't think a white wall is basic. A white wall is a white wall. An object has no life force or energy unless that thing is living. A plant lives. Clay is alive. Soil is alive. A polyester dress isn't alive. An Acrylic poster isn't alive. Things are things. And things are only as important as the amount of emphasis you place on them. A white wall to you could be basic, while having a different meaning to someone else. I do understand the gist of your post though and humans being social we tend to monkey see monkey do unless there's a smart human who is able to override their biological and social programming. There has been a grey/white wall trend for a while but I'd argue that the 'whimsy' core cultures you see online are just as basic and I'd also argue that while you think by engaging with these online communities that you're different or rebellious you're actually just conforming to another group instead of exploring and developing parts of yourself. Before the internet there were magazines, newspapers, television. Supermodels making young girls insecure, brainwashing in the media, ads in the magazines. The internet now is a bigger, more evolved beast and is not the internet of the 90s/late 2010s. People typically parrot talking points and social media in particular is one big echo chamber. Kids need to play outside and people need to spend less time on their phone for sure.

Music isn't soulless, you're using drake for an example when he is a huge musician, dig deep and find "niche" musicians/bands. Rap has always cursed or talked about women, The Geto Boys We Can't Be Stopped album literally talks about how women think they need men to be a gentleman for them, calling them bitches and saying they act handicapped with how they want men to open doors or pull up chairs for them and that was 1991. Rap has always had explicit lyrics no matter the year. If you want rap that DOESN'T talk about women like that, listen to Public Enemy, they're political and protest. Gang Starr is another good one that doesn't talk like that, they do exist.

        There are musicians out there who do truly care about what music they're making and do put hard work into it. When The Beatles came out, they were hated for being "heavy" or "inappropriate" for their time, yes they were huge and helped pave the way for a new music era. Music changes over time and the previous bands/current ones help change it. Korn and Limp bizkit got popular, made nu metal and mu metal had a surge of nu metal popularity, so yes this era of music will sound similar, it'd be annoying if it was 1999 and all day i heard the same sounding nu metal bullshit. 

   You might just prefer older music and that's okay, everyone has tastes. I prefer older music but I'm still open to listening to new music, I might not like it when it comes to newer metal, hardcore or rap but I do enjoy newer pop or some shit like Lana Del Ray.  

uhh you know what the coolest people do? not shit on other people even if they're 'basic'.. judging peoples styles and music taste only brings more negativity into the world (and besides.. most people just want to wear comfortable clothing in their day-to-day.)

music isnt soulless now ?!? what are 'plain lyrics' to you, and why should everyone care if YOU dont find the sound of their music appealing?? you want kids to love poetry and life but now youre judging them for the music they like and calling it 'overglazing'? just because you dont like their music doesnt make it not 'real art'

kids have ALWAYS been influenced by other people even before the internet. there were magazines and shit, there was tv. of course they want to be cool, thats why theyre following trends in the first place just like the kids of the past!!!

obviously theres discussions to be had about people who really dont seem to have an identity of their own and jump from trend to trend, and i also dont think people should judge others for straying from the norm... but judging them right back isnt really the way to go is it? the past was NOT so much better than the present.
