'linger' - varneyvampyre

It lingers... It's like if someone were to gently, ever so gently, crack open your chest cavity, reach inside with a steady hand, grip your heart, and hold it for a while. Like squeezing a balloon, it moulds to the empty space of their fingers, creating bulbous and gory lumps of your viscera.

Don't move. Don't even breathe. You can't even if you wanted to. It lingers...

They give one final squeeze just before they pull away. It feels like a current has jolted you alive again. Every muscle, every nerve ending, every vein. Once they finally let go, your sticky membrane clings to their perlicue; your aortas wrap and tangle between their fingers, and while there is a relief of some pressure, it lingers...

Aches like a bruise making itself at home.

Sure, you can breathe again, but it takes a little more out of you this time.

Because it always lingers.
