There was a random expo in the hall at my school today, mostly consisting of stalls with resources for teens and young adults (helplines, youth spaces, sex ed, support groups etc). We were going around to each table collecting all the free things that we could, while also of course listening to the info they told us.
We went up to a youth drug and alcohol help service stall and they had a canvas and were telling students to right down any substance they could think of. My friend turned to me jokingly and said, “Milly, you’re a pro!” Very funny. The ladies at the desk didn’t seem very amused.
Anyways we wrote down what we could think of, and I picked up a pamphlet (I was taking a lot of pamphlets from the stalls in case any of my friends need help and stuff) while my friends left. As I walked away, the lady at the stall silently and slightly forcibly handed me a tiny card with “tips for safer use of alcohol and other drugs”, and gave me a ‘knowing’ look. Awesome.
I do NOT do drugs.
This post is all in good fun, I think it’s really neat that there is help available and that, even though her assumption was wrong, that she had an interest in helping me. There was a lot of resources for so many different things, victim support, addict support, clubs and more, and it’s really awesome that its available to students and young people. Getting mistaken for a drug addict is just another core memory to add to my final year of high school.
