Why are the knives so ASS in the early games.
I've been playing the original RE1 to try and get used to using tank controls and I made the mistake of trying to kill a zombie with my knife (even though I know they are useless) and I died so quick. It's so frustrating when I run out of ammo because it's almost impossible to kill them with the knife without haemorrhaging mass amounts of health so I end up trying to run around them and getting bit anyway.
When I was playing the RE4 remake I barely had to use the knife except for parrying (which is so helpful) but at least they are easier to use with modern controls.
Anyone else have knife problems with the early RE games?

Oh, absolutely. The knife in the original RE1 is infamous for a reason.
Back then, the knife wasn't really designed to be a reliable weapon. It was more of a last resort if you completely ran out of ammo. The hitbox is tiny, the range is short, and with the fixed camera angles and tank controls it's really easy to get grabbed before you even connect with a hit.
One thing that helped me was realizing that classic Resident Evil isn't about killing everything. It's more about resource management. Sometimes it's actually better to leave a zombie alive if it's in a room you rarely visit, and save your ammo for areas you'll be backtracking through a lot.
If you keep playing the classic games, you'll notice the knife gets much better in later entries. Resident Evil Code: Veronica and especially the original Resident Evil 4 made it way more useful, and the remakes took it even further with the parry system. The knife in RE4 Remake is honestly one of the most satisfying mechanics in the series.
If you end up enjoying RE1, I'd definitely recommend the remake from 2002 too. It keeps the fixed cameras and tank controls, but the gameplay feels much more refined, and it's still one of the best survival horror games ever made in my opinion ʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ
I have already played a bit of the remake on my switch, I've been enjoying it a lot, I was so scared at first but I just reached the lab and I feel pretty prepared with ammo for once (I'm playing on the easiest difficulty lol).
I've been playing the OG on my laptop but the remake doesn't run properly on it so I have to wait for my turn with the switch cuz it's a shared console ;_; but I'm excited to keep playing it!

I scored every nook and cranny achievment but I shall not do the knife only, it was a hell of thing to do ☹
i feel like i might be able to get that one because i took everything from the shotgun room before the cutscene but i know i'll never be able to do the really hard achievements. especially when playing on the easiest difficulty can be hard for me ;_;

I played on normal and planned to do a survival horror but gave up, without auto-aiming it's even more hard
