trouble with getting parental approval to diagnosis...advice appreciated

im going to the apparently roughest grade in highschool (junior year) and im really worried. i am suspecting i might be neurodivergent of some sort, idk what. and my friends who were officially diagnosed (with adhd) suspected it from me.

my parents opted me out of any support that my schools tried to give me when growing up (elementary and middle school) because they didn't want to accept that label ig. my mother told me she opted me out of these "special classes for very smart kids" in my elementary school because she claimed she didn't wnat me to be lonely. she gets offended whenevr any kid or adult expresses their concerns for me. ive also had my parents joke about my teacher as a kid being concerned cuz i didn't respond to my name right away in class. i rememmber crying everyday trying to do my homework WHEN I WAS IN KINDERGARTEN!! my middle school tried to put me in these extra support classes, but the last year they refused my parents disapproval. and tbh, the class was really helpful and i really enjoyed it.

but im also not sure if i even possible have adhd or if im faking it. i have a list of reasons why i could but idk. i noticed all of my adhd friends struggle a lot with deadlines and tend to submit past due dates or dont turn it in at all. but ive kinda had the opposite. id get really anxious and i HATED that feeling and itd mess me up so bad, so i try my best to complete it as fast as possible (even if its absolute BS). it doesn't always happen but thats the only way i can complete things XD. there is probabaly another thing but i dont rememember it rn. I DO understand that it is a spectrum and people have different experiences, but idk if its valid for me to say anything because i again, dont have any professional diagnosis and my knowledge only comes from research i did for years and from people i knew personally who are diagnosed.

i suggested to the school counselor during the school year that my friend suggested the program thats helpful for people like me, but they said i needed parental approval. my mother is VERY stubborn and she wont take any disagreement. i brought it up to them and i spongebobviously had no luck, they dont believe that i am struggling with this and i dont know if i can wait until im legally an adult.  Plz let me know if im delusional or if there really is a possibility. thanks

I just got my adhd diagnosis last year at 17 years old, it felt like such a relief to finally have the closure that I'm not insane or stupid, my brain is literally shaped differently. I really hope you get what you need!! Highschool while being undiagnosed neurodivergent is hell sometimes. Actually highschool while being neurodivergent full stop can be hell sometimes lol.

no clue if you have adhd or not, i dont know you personally, but id say if youve done your research and people around you who have it say your experience is similar then you've got reason to suspect something is up.

sucks that your parents wont accept you needing extracurricular help. they arent the ones living in your brain/body, not sure how they'd know better than you if you're struggling or not. i get it though, my parents outright denied my depression diagnosis for months (my therapist eventually kind of got through to them but i digress)

good luck, really hoping you can eventually get through to them

Thank you so much. The point about them not living in my brain/body is a good way to put it. I hope things are doing alright for you too🥹

ofc, i hope things look up for you soon. even if your parents never change their minds (tho i hope they do) you'll eventually be able to surround yourself with people who support you and help you get the resources you need.

theyre doing good for me, yeah! ^^
