been checking out more of what the small net has to offer
and there is a lot there.
Small Web
Smol net
IndieWeb
Web Revival
Old Web / Retro Web
Digital Gardens
Webrings
Geminispace / capsules
Gopherspace / gopherholes
Tildeverse
pubnixes
BBSes
IRC and XMPP and Matrix
just to name a few :)
i really like the ideas of smol net, permacomputing and the slow net particularly.
I need to be more intentional and slow and methodical with what enters my brain. the Algo is the enemy. It is the demiurge. it is a Lokean dark force on our minds. Purge it.

I am really not well-versed in tech stuff, let alone the terminology, but what is small web/net exactly? If it's just stuff like forums and such, then I guess I never really left the small net. I still use a ton of old tech/applications (I still use WinAmp...) and visit many forums (mainly music related) since I prefer that format. Is small web just the world without the echo-chamber inducing algo?
pretty much. However you can also define your own echo chamber
you control the keys. you can make the feed. RSS is your tool of cultivation. Small websites, microblogs, tiny corners of the web still updated since the 90s, with the same shitty HTML.
IRC chats are still alive. XMPP is growing, Pubsub and fediverse feeds can enter and no data can leave. its all yours to curate
Also give Gemini/Gopher a look. It might surprise you and be exactly what a lot of us are looking for, Ill be exploring geminispace this week

Once you start going back to smallweb, forums, imageboards, stuff without these short form content doomscrolling features and algorithms, you realize just how predatory the modern internet is.
It's made to capture your attention, keep you addicted so that you never feel like logging off, and keep you feeling like you need to react and engage with every thing.
captured attention has been a big thought process of mine for the last few days, I discovered the work being done by the "Friends of Attention" needless to say, I am on board.
