Recently I have had a large amount of "ranters" on my social media pages. A lot of these ranters make really excellent argues, and I agree with a lot of the things that they talk about. However though, I can't help but notice that a lot of them talk about how people should not be using AI because it is bad for the environment and society etc. Yet they do this while using an AI voice over?
If you claim to not support AI then that means that you shouldn't be using it? Using an AI voice is just as bad as generating images with AI. A lot of people would argue that it is not since generating AI art is "replacing artists", while AI voice over could never take over real voice actors. Here's the thing though; if you look back to how AI voice overs sounded back in 2020, and compare it to now, there is a lot of improvement, right? If we continue to use and support the use of AI voice over, some day it probably will replace voice actors.
Especially people who use AI voices that replicate character voices. You are taking a voice actor's voice without their permission and running it through AI to make it say whatever you want it to. A lot of voice actors have expressed that this makes them uncomfortable, yet I still see so many of these "rants" using generative AI voices to replicate certain actor's voices.
If you are really against AI, then don't use an AI voice over. It may seem like a small thing that doesn't impact people much, but in the long run it does matter. I love hearing human voice overs. It has so much more personality, especially in a world where AI voices are so normalized everywhere.

i've seen all kinds of people demean people's AI generation for a medium they feel more closely aligned with while brushing aside the harm of AI generation for other forms of mediums--writers using gen AI images as "art" covers but disliking generation for "writing", musicians using gen AI images for album covers but not liking generated music or images of them, artists & fanfic writers using chatbots but hating gen AI images and text... its just so very hypocritical. i don't like being the person who generalizes a huge group of people holding genuine criticism and advocating against something harmful as "performative" or "following trends" and brush aside meaningful commentary. however, some people who criticize gen AI really do lack an understanding of being against generated AI and ultimately are misguided about where your prioritizes should be at when criticizing AI.
hate towards gen AI shouldn't be about it looking "bad", or "soulless", or even only replacing visual artists (which feels more like a point that's too on the surface[?] to acknowledge that gen AI was created to avoid paying for work labor in general terms, not JUST visual artists!). it should be about AI database centers being disproportionately placed in poor neighborhoods and affecting water supplies of those already disadvantaged, it being built on the lack of consent from other people to use their images, it being ingrained with and constantly perpetuating bigotry due to being built on patterns from a fuck tons of online human-made content that's bigoted and biased itself, its harm towards the environment being significant (and perhaps more worse in hindsight) due to it being an unnecessary tool we literally don't need for our daily lives like other tech that also have a part in harming the environment, and as i said before, it literally being created to avoid paying for work labor.... like its really that deep. but unfortunately many people fail to acknowledge this in their commentary about disliking gen AI and will indulge in any AI as long it isnt a "threat" to them in some way

Omg exactly! I remember telling one of these ranters when I still used TikTok this bcs she used an AI Rarity voice and she tried to tell me to my face that it wasn't AI and was just TTS </3

it really depends, some may choose to use text to speech which has existed far longer and isn't ai, though if they are using an ai voice model that's def a big no-no.
