- The songs Lease by Takashi Abo and Aquatic Ambiance by Scizzle are way too overplayed. I understand that these are the most well known FA songs, but my god every single mix I find has both of them in there, sometimes multiple times. There's so much more FA related music out there, you just have to look for it. Might I suggest ArpWire TV as a jumping off point?
- A FA society couldn't exist outside of it being purely aesthetic. FA promotes peace and equality, and it just won't happen. At least, not in its purest form. We humans are too different to live in peace 100% of the time. War, arguments, etc. are going to happen. Even societies that promote this kind of tranquility have some sort of baggage. An example would be either Detroit Deluxe from the show Motorcity or the city from Mirror's Edge. With that being said, I understand why people look at FA this way. We need something that gives us hope more now than ever, so this idea that society can get better and we one day can reach this utopia keeps people going.
- People not alive or were otherwise too young to remember the peak of FA should still be allowed to join the community. I mentioned this in my last post, but gatekeeping kills communities more than it helps, so only allowing a certain age demographic of people to join a community is pretty dumb. Teens especially do need something to gravitate towards. Life kinda sucks right now, so if staring at a fish light or creating art of an aesthetic that hasn't been in vogue in about 20 years keeps them going, then by all means let them be!
- With that being said, a lot of the new artworks and other things kinda flanderize the community a bit. FA is far more than just fish, water, and the MSN logo. Skeuomorphism, auroras, glass and gloss, cool tones etc. also can make something FA.
- The iMac G3 and other brightly coloured Apple products from the late 90s and early 2000s are both FA and Y2K. These blobject PCs share some elements later popularized in FA, such as translucency, cool colours[mainly greens, teals and blues], and rounded smoothed shapes. Something can fall into both categorizes, especially with Y2K and FA.
- Military and horror don't really belong in FA. I've mainly seen this a lot on Reddit, but some people are trying to make things like horror games or collages featuring things like guns. The whole point of FA is to promote a sense of calm and healing, and war/horror go against that idea. It's like trying to mix oil and water.
- TikTok FA is very different from how it used to be. FA back in the day was far more subtle with a wider colour palate, and more of a focus on auroras and nature aesthetics. Now, everything is super maximalist and full of fish and aquatic life. A lot of that has to do with the change in trends, but I see TikTok FA as the "scenecore" to the 2000s era's "scene."
- Related, the maximalism is also super tryhard and ugly. Look, if it makes you happy, go nuts. But you don't always need to go balls to the wall for something to look good.
- I am so sick of peoples' phone screens. In fairness, this is more of an issue with r/frutigeraero on Reddit. It's like half of the posts are just people sharing their phone's home or lock screens, and they almost all look identical. I have no issue with people ricing their phone[especially with Android, as it's designed to do that] but the posts do get quite repetitive.
- Unjust Jewelry gives me bad vibes. For some context, he's a FA influencer who runs a storefront where he sells nostalgia inspired items. He's been embroiled in quite a bit of controversy recently over the fact he's been attempting to trademark the term Frutiger Aero for his perfume. Even before the trademark, he seemed like a grifter to me. Some of his items were found to contain AI generated images, other items have also been found to be drop shipped[and cost significantly more], and he just slaps the first image he finds on Google image search onto his boxes. He also removes negative Trustpilot reviews, and never responds to customer complaints or questions. I also wondered if he made his jewelry himself, as it almost looks like costume quality [Cheap and tends to fall apart/turn your skin green], but I don't have any evidence for or against this claim, so it's really just a hunch.
- Windows XP's Luna theme isn't FA, but it isn't Y2K either. Luna fits into it's own category. The only things FA about XP are the Bliss background, and MSN messenger.
- Window's Vista sucks dog eggs. Vista almost seems to have a cult following now, but it went away for a reason. It was unstable, buggy, chugged on most hardware, and had its service packs released too late. I do agree that it is the best looking version of Windows. 7 came in and saved the day.
- Apple's Liquid Glass is about as close as we are going to get to companies acknowledging FA. It's more neumorphism/glassmorphism, but eh, close enough. I actually like Liquid Glass. It's looks cool. I feel like most of the complaints are either people running it on older hardware[where it does suck] or complaining for the sake of it. People were begging for Apple to move past flat design for years, then they did, and they still complain. Really gives off "I'm never happy."
- AI doesn't belong anywhere near FA. OK calling this an unpopular opinion is a bit of a stretch, but there is a subset of FA people who think using AI for making these images is perfectly fine. Half of the messaging of FA is promoting a balance between nature and technology, and AI just doesn't do that. It pollutes the environment, uses way too many resources, and looks off to boot.
- FA started off as a example of corporate greenwashing. The tech started off as a way to test the visual fidelity of new LCD screens, but later, companies started pushing this idea of living in a society if you bought their products. Especially promoting eco friendliness, which we now know was all one big lie. The aesthetic was later reclaimed by nostalgic individuals, given its new name, and now is quite the opposite of corporate.
