So, we finally got some sort of answer on the mother-in-law/apartment thing. She didn't make the initial draw, but she's on the wait list.
She's #934.
It's no surprise that she's currently thinking that death may be her only way out.
So, now my partner and I get to sit down and think about what the future might look like with his mother in it on a more permanent basis.
Things are getting harder all around for everyone, housing especially, and it's not going to get any better. I had a brief moment of thought about what it would take to buy the house from our landlord so that we would have a safe haven for family and friends, but that's a pipe dream for sure.
This is going to take some major restructuring to turn this from a "You're staying here until you get your feet under you, here's your conditions" to "You're now a rent paying roommate, we now have to agree on joint concessions". It's going to be a very different world now, and I don't think it's going to go smoothly. She already feels entitled to our time and our space, and I think that that's likely to increase once she becomes a money paying member of the household.
It's definitely going to put an even greater strain on my partner, because he was using the end of three years as a sort of "light at the end of the tunnel" situation, and quite frankly, so was I. It's real fuckin' disappointing to realize that light was just a lamp.
She's bummed. We're bummed. It's a shit show all around.
