I'm very obsessed with the concept of a song parody, I still watch them an awful lot and usually prefer them over the originals!!
I really like it when they're goofy, so while the original song is over there yapping about heartbreak as if we didn't hear that for the millionth time (I'm not saying heartbreak is nothing), the parody is over there flipping the topic entirely into something that I can't believe must be called unique..
Like WHY DO MOST SONGS TALK ABOUT LOVE OR BEING TOUGH YEAH PARTYING??? I know there are many indie artists that I haven't discovered and that probably choose different topics, but maybe they didn't get much traffic cause everyone is carried away by "We broke up here's some self deprecation and blaming"
I know I got off topic, but I HATE MINECRAFT SONG PARODIES. Not all of them, not saying I hate it when people find joy in things, but a lot of times it's just 90% of the original song's lyrics and replacing one word with something from the MC vocabulary!!!
For example "There once was a ship" and then it would turn into "There once a creeper" WOW OKAY LYRICAL GENIUS
I know you're not supposed to change EVERY lyric, sometimes changing one word is enough, but NOT FOR THE WHOLE PARODY
Same could be said for the "sus" versions
Also, the "edgelords" who mask their horrendous hatred towards everyone except themselves as "dark humor" aren't artists at all, idc if you're "trolling" or "it's just a joke". That doesn't change the fact that your whole "parody" could be boiled down to "HAHA LOOK AT INDIAN HAHA wait ouch no don't make fun of my extremist ideology".
On a much nerdier note, THE FLOW OF THE LYRICS SHOULD MATCH THE ORIGINAL!! Forcing words into the flow makes it hard to sing along and sometimes incomprehensible!!! Pronoucing words in weird ways like "acshoowally" instead of "actually", or "look in thuuuuuuuuuh back" with that over-stretched "THE" like AAAAAAAAAA
Now, the great thing about parodies is that anybody can make them, singer or not, and I can't sing to save my life, but that doesn't mean singing 2 octaves lower and sounding bored in the vocal performance??? You're over there rapping like an ogre when the original artist is in a low vocal range???
Sure, do it when the singer hits notes higher than a dog whistle, but don't expect autotune and pitch correction in general to save your vocals if you aren't even trying
I HATE IT WHEN THE PARODY JUST MOCKS THE ARTIST/ORIGINAL SONG. If it's clever critique of the premise for example then that's awesome!! But if it's just "I look like X and Y had a kid" or "I can't sing" when the person singing the parody is sounding like a robot is ridiculouss!!!
It gets so weird when the parody artist is DESCRIBING WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE ORIGINAL MUSIC VIDEO!!!!! (Bart Baker is especially infamous for that), like I'm sorry but is the music video integrated with the song??? Those jokes only work if you're watching the music video, but listening to "This is the scene where X and Y, I'm doing this haha" is out of place and feels like filler???
I'm in no way a Weird Al, but that doesn't mean I can't yap about those song parodies from the point of view of a pseudo-intellectual elitist viewer!!
Just wanted to ramble about this whole stuff and I don't expect anyone to care about such a specific topic yikesss
