La inquilina del vestido azul / The dress lodger - Sheri Holman
Acomodando en casa de mi abuelita los libros que ya me había prestado, vi este que estaba nuevo, aún con el plástico, me llamó la atención y se lo robé jijiji.
La historia sigue a Agustine, una joven de 15 años que trabaja como asistente en una alfarería de día y como prostituta de noche para sobrevivir. Gustine es una "dress lodger" (inquilina del vestido), lo que significa que le alquila a su proxeneta un hermoso vestido azul para atraer a clientes adinerados. Para evitar que huya o robe la prenda, su pimp envía a una siniestra anciana conocida como "El Ojo", quien la vigila a solas en la oscuridad. Todo lo que hace es para mantener y proteger a su bebé de cuatro meses. Su hijo nació con una rara deformidad anatómica llamada ectopia cordis (tiene el corazón por fuera del pecho, protegido solo por una fina capa de piel translúcida).
Gustine conoce al Dr. Henry Chiver. Este carece de cuerpos para sus clases de anatomía en Sunderland, por lo que hace un trato con Gustine: ella le informará sobre cadáveres de la calle a cambio de su ayuda médica para su hijo. Pero todo se complica cuando Chiver descubre la extraña condición del bebé de Gustine, cegado por la obsesión científica y la ambición médica, empieza a codiciar al niño para sus estudios, amenazando la seguridad de la criatura.
El libro, la verdad, me pareció muy interesante y triste al mismo tiempo, es muy deprimente ver las condiciones en las que vivían las personas como Agustine en esas épocas, cómo desde tan pequeña tenía que recurrir a ese tipo de soluciones para poder poner un techo sobre su bebé y comprarle ropa. A lo largo de la obra de verdad se puede sentir el amor y la desesperación de Agustine para que su criatura esté bien, sin importar lo que a ella le pase. También fue muy curioso ver cómo las personas en esos años pintaban a los médicos diciendo que ellos mataban a la gente y estaban tan en contra de ellos, ya que a lo largo de la obra se pueden ver varios momentos donde a Chiver lo acusan de asesino solo por querer estudiar el cuerpo humano y cómo sanarlo.
Sí diría que es un libro agridulce por todo lo que pasa, pero sí lo recomendaría:

While organizing the books my granny had already lent me at her house, I saw this one that was brand new, still in its plastic wrap, it caught my attention, so I stole it from her hehehe.
The story follows Agustine, a 15-year-old girl who works as a pottery assistant by day and as a prostitute by night just to survive. Agustine is a "dress lodger," which means she rents a beautiful blue dress from her pimp to attract wealthy clients. To prevent her from running away or stealing the dress, her pimp sends a sinister old woman known as "The Eye," who watches her alone in the dark. Everything she does is to support and protect her four-month-old baby. Her son was born with a rare anatomical deformity called ectopia cordis (his heart is on the outside of his chest, protected only by a thin layer of translucent skin).
Agustine meets Dr. Henry Chiver. He lacks bodies for his anatomy classes in Sunderland, so he strikes a deal with Gustine: she will inform him about street corpses in exchange for medical help for her son. But everything gets complicated when Chiver discovers the baby's unusual condition, blinded by scientific obsession and medical ambition, he begins to covet the child for his studies, threatening the creature's safety.
To be honest, I found the book very interesting and sad at the same time, it is truly depressing to see the conditions people like Agustine lived in back in those times, and how from such a young age she had to resort to those types of solutions just to put a roof over her baby and buy him clothes. Throughout the book, you can really feel Agustine's love and desperation to make sure her child is okay, no matter what happens to her. It was also very curious to see how people in those years portrayed doctors as murderers and were so against them, since throughout the story you can see several moments where Chiver is accused of being a killer just for wanting to study the human body and learn how to heal it.
I would say it is a bittersweet book because of everything that happens, but I would definitely recommend it: 9/10.
