Learning to Be Patient With Myself

I don't think people realize how exhausting recovery from a triple cervical fusion really is.

It's not just neck pain. It's the constant fatigue, the soreness, the random nerve pain, the stiffness, the swallowing issues, the sleepless nights, and the mental battle that comes with feeling like your life has been put on hold. Healing has become my full-time job, and honestly... it's one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Some days I feel guilty that I can't work. I miss feeling productive. I miss having a routine. I miss feeling independent. It's hard not to feel like I'm letting people down when my body decides what I'm capable of each day instead of me.

I keep reminding myself that my spine literally had to be rebuilt. My body isn't being lazy—it's pouring every bit of energy into healing. Recovery isn't something I can rush, no matter how badly I want my old life back.

The emotional side has surprised me the most. I never expected to grieve the version of myself that could just get up and go without thinking twice. I miss working. I miss feeling useful. I miss feeling like *me*.

But I'm trying. Every day, I'm trying. Even when all I accomplish is getting through the day, taking my walks, or making it through another wave of exhaustion, that's still progress. Healing isn't always visible, and it definitely isn't linear.

So if I've been quieter than usual, less energetic, or seem a little distant, I'm not giving up. I'm just putting everything I have into recovering.

I know I'll get there. I just have to keep going, one day at a time, even when it's really, really hard. 🖤
