This is going to be a long entry so before I start I want to clarify some things. I AM NOT asking for anyone to diagnose me, nor will I be diagnosing anyone else. I am a random teenager on the internet, not a psychologist. I just want to rant about something that's getting in the way of my personal life.
Have you ever had something with almost no benefits that takes up hours of your time? Now for most people in the current generation that thing is doomscrolling, but for me it's something far more unexplainable and confusing. Whenever I get ideas in my head for something to draw, write, animate, etc., I start walking, skipping or running, depending on how vivid the idea is. My expressions change based on the emotions of the characters and I'm practically unresponsive to anything in the real world. This might seem a bit harmless at first, but the difficult part is that it will go on for hours at a time, any minute of the day. My family has expressed a lot of frustrations because they'll wake up to the sound of me sprinting back and forth around my house. When they yell at me or tell me to stop they often pair it with,
"Go run around outside,"
or, "Go run around in the basement."
But I don't want to do either of those things. Most of the time I don't want to be running either. So I refuse, which only makes them more upset because they think I'm just trying to annoy them. One time my aunt lightly implied that I was autistic and told my mother she should "stop punishing me for things I can't control," but that caused my mother to suggest that I was FAKING IT TO BE QUIRKY. I don't know why I act the way that I do and I suffer a lot from imposter syndrome but I sincerely promise I am not getting up and running laps at 5am to make people think I'm autistic.
I will admit that sometimes I do purposefully start daydreaming when I'm bored, sad, scared, or lonely. They calm me down and it can be kind of fun to stop feeling my own body thoughts and emotions and focus on nonexistent conflicts in a made up world instead. Once I start though, it's very difficult to stop. Usually I stop when someone shouts at me or straight up grabs me to force me to stop moving.
One thing that I'm conflicted about is whether or not I want to completely stop having these daydreaming sprees. I mean, sure it gets me in trouble and makes everyone mad at me, but I love the things I come up with during these episodes. All the characters and stories I come up with are perfectly suited to me and it's how I get the majority of my art ideas. If I asked my therapist about how to stop daydreaming so much would I still be as creative as I am now? The idea scares me so I keep the thought to myself. Sometimes I just wish I could find a word describing my daily experiences.
"Maladaptive daydreaming is a behavior where a person spends an excessive amount of time daydreaming, often becoming immersed in their imagination. This behavior is usually a coping mechanism in people who have mental health conditions like anxiety. For some people, this behavior disrupts work, hobbies or friendships and relationships." - Cleveland Health Clinic
I first started experiencing these disassociated daydreams a little over a year ago, and I discovered this definition a few months after that. I'd recommend researching it yourself but basically, it's a not-yet-recognized mental condition that mainly effects young adults and teenagers, particularly young people with ADHD.. I don't know if I've written a blog about it, but I am a young person with ADHD that runs through an entire half of my family. I don't take medication (even though I probably should,) and I don't go to any regular therapy to help me manage it. But what I'm wondering is, if I started taking medication for my ADHD, would it lessen my maladaptive daydreams as well? It's just something to think about.
I have a lot more to say, but this entry is getting long and I really don't want to just rant about my degrading mental health to strangers on my computer too much. For my questions today..
1. Have you ever experienced daydreams that are so vivid you disassociate from the real world?
2. What's your screentime today? No lying.
3. What's the name of the last song you listened to/are currently listening to?
