La historia comienza en la década de 1930 en Yoroido, un pequeño pueblo pesquero. Chiyo Sakamoto y su hermana Satsu son vendidas por su padre tras la enfermedad terminal de su madre. Separadas al llegar a Kioto, Chiyo es enviada a la okiya (casa de geishas) Nitta en el barrio de Gion, mientras que su hermana es llevada a un prostíbulo.

En la okiya, Chiyo enfrenta el maltrato y la hostilidad de Hatsumomo, la geisha principal de la casa. El destino de Chiyo cambia cuando conoce al "Presidente" (para ese momento Chiyo desconoce su nombre mas alla de oir a unas geishas refiriendose a el como presidente), un hombre amable que le regala unas monedas y un helado en un momento de desesperación. Desde ese día, Chiyo decide convertirse en geisha con un único propósito: volver a formar parte de la vida del Presidente.

Poco después, Mameha, una de las geishas más prestigiadas de Kioto y rival de Hatsumomo, la toma bajo su protección como su "hermana menor". Mameha invierte en su formación artística y la rebautiza con el nombre profesional de Sayuri.  

Bajo la tutela de Mameha, Sayuri aprende las artes tradicionales: danza, música (shamisen), vertido de sake y conversación refinada. Sayuri es adoptada como la heredera oficial de la okiya Nitta, desplazando a Hatsumomo, quien termina destruyendo la okiya por sus propios celos y es expulsada de Gion.

La llegada de la guerra suspende el mundo de las geishas. Gion se vacía, las casas cierran y Sayuri es enviada al campo para trabajar en la confección de telas.  Tras la derrota de Japón, el mundo tradicional de las geishas resurge transformado para entretener a los oficiales militares estadounidenses. Sayuri regresa a Gion para ayudar a Nobu en la reconstrucción del negocio del Presidente.

Finalmente, el Presidente le confiesa que siempre supo quién era ella y que había pedido a Mameha que la apadrinara. Ambos inician una relación y Sayuri eventualmente se traslada a Nueva York abriendo y gestionando una casa de té de estilo japonés, donde pasa el resto de sus días recordando su vida en Kioto.

El libro es bastante grande porque explica detalladamente todo el proceso de como Chiyo pasa a ser aprendiz, para caer en esclava y despues aprendiz nuevamente con Mameha como su hermana mayor, se describe muy exacto sus vestuarios, como se realizan los peinados e incluso sus maquillajes, como es su proceso de maiko (aprendiz de geisha), luego a ser una geisha oficial y todo lo que conlleva serlo.

Es hermoso pero tambien es muy cruel saber todo lo que ellas tienen que pasar y que la gran mayoria si es que no todas, son geishas en contra de su voluntad, gracias a este libro las geishas me han empezado a llamar mucho la atencion e intento investigar y saber mas sobre ellas porque me parecen muy interesantes. 

A pesar de ponerme un poco triste al final porque Sayuri se queda con el presidente y Nobu se queda solo (el es mi personaje favorito pipipi) siendo que el hizo muchisimo por Sayuri, pero al final el hombre que ella amo desde siempre fue el presidente, pero al mismo tiempo feliz ya que las geishas no tienen el derecho de elegir con quien estar y la gran mayoria de ellas viven infelices con hombres al que mo aman 10/10

The story begins in the 1930s in Yoroido, a small fishing village. Chiyo Sakamoto and her sister Satsu are sold by their father after their mother's terminal illness. Separated upon arriving in Kyoto, Chiyo is sent to the Nitta okiya (geisha house) in the Gion district, while her sister is taken to a brothel.

In the okiya, Chiyo faces mistreatment and hostility from Hatsumomo, the head geisha of the house. Chiyo's fate changes when she meets the "President" (at that point, Chiyo doesn't know his name beyond overhearing some geishas referring to him as the President), a kind man who gives her a few coins and shaved ice in a moment of despair. From that day on, Chiyo decides to become a geisha with a single purpose: to become a part of the President's life again.

Shortly after, Mameha, one of Kyoto's most prestigious geishas and Hatsumomo's rival, takes Chiyo under her wing as her "younger sister." Mameha invests in her artistic training and renames her under the professional name Sayuri.

Under Mameha's tutelage, Sayuri learns the traditional arts: dance, music (shamisen), pouring sake, and refined conversation. Sayuri is adopted as the official heir of the Nitta okiya, displacing Hatsumomo, who ends up destroying the okiya out of her own jealousy and is expelled from Gion.

The arrival of the war puts the world of geishas on hold. Gion empties out, the houses close, and Sayuri is sent to the countryside to work in textile production. After Japan's defeat, the traditional geisha world reemerges, transformed to entertain American military officers. Sayuri returns to Gion to help Nobu rebuild the President's business.

Finally, the President confesses to her that he always knew who she was and that he had asked Mameha to sponsor (I'm not sure if that's the word I'm looking for, i hope it works and make sense u_u) her. The two begin a relationship, and Sayuri eventually moves to New York, opening and managing a Japanese-style teahouse where she spends the rest of her days reminiscing about her life in Kyoto.

The book is quite long because it explains in detail the entire process of how Chiyo goes from being an apprentice, to becoming a servant, and then an apprentice again with Mameha as her older sister. It describes very precisely their outfits, how their hairstyles are done, and even their makeup, what her process is like as a maiko (apprentice geisha), then becoming an official geisha, and everything that entails.

It is beautiful, but it's also very cruel to learn about everything they have to go through and that the vast majority, if not all of them, are geishas against their will. Thanks to this book, geishas have really caught my attention, and I try to research and learn more about them because I find them super interesting.

Even though I got a little sad at the end because Sayuri ends up with the Chairman and Nobu is left all alone :c considering he did so much for Sayuri, but in the end, the man she always loved was the Chairman.  But at the same time, I was happy because geishas don't have the right to choose who to be with, and the vast majority of them live unhappy lives with men they don't love. 10/10
