Off work for a while

View photo

I’m off work for a while, not intentionally though. I can’t believe that I am still very clumsy as I was when I was a kid, maybe more who knows?!

We have had such a rainy summer. My garden has been suffering from too much water from all of the rain. My yard is saturated. My state has had some major flooding. It’s just too much. My backyard is hillside, actually my whole yard is. There’s a little spot in the front that’s kind of level.

Anyways, I had to go to my basement for something for my stepson. You have to go out back and walk down the hill a little to get to the door. I was being as careful as I could be since it was dark out and the grass was damp. I was wearing my favorite sandals, which are a pair of Nike slides. I should’ve known better.

So I got what I needed and I was walking back up the hill. It was about 8pm and it was dark enough for me to have trouble seeing and I’m walking as carefully as I could. All the sudden I slipped in a muddy spot and down I went. Happened very fast. Landed on my knees and hands. I was worried that I might have hurt my hip that I just had replaced last year. (That’s a huge fear of mine.) Then I felt something painful and weird. When I went down, my toes on my left foot slid out of my sandal and got caught in the mud sideways. The smallest one got the worst of it. I yelled oww! Got myself up and stumbled onto my back porch and looked at my foot. Took my sandal off and saw my toe hanging crooked out to the left. In a fast omg panic, I moved my toe straight again. It was weird because it hurt but at the same time it felt kinda numb. I put my sandal back on and limped back into my house. Family asked me what happened and I said I fell and here’s the charger. I went to go to the shower to rinse off.

After I rinsed off quickly, it started to hit me. The pain and panic. All at once very fast. So here I go laying on the floor for a half hour waiting for that feeling to pass. All I can think of is “Damn why now? I need to work because he’s still healing. I can’t work like this, I NEED my feet for my job!”

After most of that panic feeling went away I knew something wasn’t right. I’ve had multiple bones broken over the years and of course the hip surgery. Most of the time I would just tape them together and move on. Well this one was worse and there is no way I could do my job all day, I’m one of those shoppers for people who order online in a big box store. I work anywhere from 8-10 hours and I couldn’t even stand on my foot for 30 seconds last night.

So I ended up driving myself to the nearest ER, which is basically right around the corner from where I live. Usually we avoid that hospital but I really had no choice. Husband is not 100% well and his kids are here for the weekend. I go there and they brought the Xray machine to me and looked at it real quick. I here the tech say to the doctor “see right there.” I was thinking oh great I was right. A little bit later a nurse said well it’s broke. She put this huge boot on me and gave me a pain pill to take when I got home since I drove myself. At least I was in and out of there in a hour and a half!

I have a doctors excuse for the whole weekend off. I had Monday off anyway because I requested it off for my granddaughters birthday party. I was going to leave work early on Tuesday for a doctors appointment for something totally unrelated. I had to use 8 hours of my PPTO to call off for today. I have a friend who works where I do and she said I need to call my manager and get the number for their temporary time off thing they do. I did that and that is a great thing they do for the employees. They gave me until the 10th off until I get seen by my orthopedic doctor to find out how long I’ll be out or if I’ll have restrictions. I have to let them know everything, which I don’t mind because this protects me from losing my job. I love that.

I know it’s “just a toe break” but apparently when I moved it back in place I did just right and it lined back up. But damn that thing hurts and it’s starting to turn the colors of the rainbow now on top of my foot and under the toe. Yay me 😒.
