This is the second book of the Dollaganger series! After escaping from the attic where they spent years of abuse and neglect at the hands of their mother and grandmother, the three siblings take a train to Florida, heartbroken over the loss of Cory (my boy definitely didn’t deserve that T-T). On the train, they meet Henny, who decides to help them and take them to the home of her boss, Dr. Paul, a 45-year-old widower with practically no family. The man decides to take them in and cares for them as if they were his own children.
And that’s when things start to get messy, because Cathy manages to get into a very prestigious ballet academy and fights with all her strength to become a professional dancer, not just out of passion, but out of revenge???? “I just don’t get how she could twist that into revenge.” Since her mother is living her life like nothing ever happened, completely abandoning the children she once had, Cathy wants her mother to see the “woman” she has become. From then on, every decision Cathy makes goes from bad to worse. “Cathy is just way too stressful.”
Then there’s Chris, still in love with Cathy, and honestly not even a lobotomy could make that man let her go, he keeps saying she’s the only woman he could ever love. “LIKE THAT IS LITERALLY A SIN.” And all this nonsense just keeps piling up, while poor Carrie suffers the most in the entire story (,,╥﹏╥,,). My baby, aside from the trauma the attic left her with (she literally couldn’t grow properly because of it), is devastated by the death of her twin brother Cory. It broke her so badly that she constantly thinks, “I should’ve died with him” or “I was the one who should’ve died.” And to make matters worse, she tries to go to school like a normal little girl, BUT SHE GETS HORRIBLY BULLIED and ends up even more traumatized. “Poor little Carrie, oh my god, why do they do this to her? This is just awful.”
Then Cathy, in all her brilliance, decides she wants to SEDUCE PAUL AND HE LETS HER??? So now Paul isn’t just a father figure, but also a romantic one?? They even decide to GET MARRIED, but right before, Cathy goes “mmm no, better not,” and instead marries her ballet teacher’s son (Julian), who’s just another messed-up man and honestly only good for ballet.
After putting Cathy through absolute hell in their marriage, Julian gets into a car accident and literally KILLS HIMSELF in the hospital by pulling out a tube that kept him alive, all out of pure tantrum. Right after that, Cathy announces she’s pregnant with his child… “this can't be.”
Somehow Cathy manages to get in contact with her mother’s husband, and of course her “brilliant” idea is to seduce him and magically, she succeeds :/ Things go so far that she even gets a copy of the house keys, sneaks into a CHRISTMAS PARTY, and exposes EVERYTHING her mother did in front of her, Bart (her husband), and all the guests.
Corrine breaks down so badly that she literally BURNS DOWN the mansion, killing her mother and Bart with it. Apparently, she loses her mind completely and gets locked in a mental asylum. And once again, my girl Cathy ends up pregnant—but this time with Bart’s child. So now she has TWO kids who are fatherless. “I honestly can’t stand Cathy, she drives me crazy.” In the end, she stays with Chris, and together they raise the children. That’s the end of the second book.
Honestly, I just couldn’t stress myself out any more with Cathy’s stupid, nonsensical behavior. With that ending, I seriously don’t know how you can squeeze three more books out of this story. I didn’t even feel that “OMG, what happens next?” urge, so I’m in no rush to read them. Anyway, I did find the rest at some second-hand book stalls for super cheap, so maybe one day… Final conclusion: all the characters are horrible, and the only innocent ones are Carrie and Cory. 6/10.
