real person fanfiction has always been in fandom spaces, specifically band and youtuber fandom spaces. fanart, fanfiction, and everything that comes with it has been pretty normalized within these spaces. Some more well known examples being frerard (gerard way x frank iero), larry stylinson (harry styles x louis tomlinson), phan (daniel howell x phil lester), and septiplier (markiplier x jacksepticeye).
Even in other fandoms, like for shows and movies, rpf and real person shipping still takes place. First thing that comes to mind for me is finn wolfhard x noah schnapp and finn wolfhard x jack dylan-grazer. Why is he shipped with every male costar he has? I don't know.
In most fandoms where shipping takes place, usually are teenage girls/queers with pronouns and blue hair dominated (im so funny.) From what i've noticed, in most fandoms where the shipping takes place between real people, its usually between 2 men.
I could make a whole separate blog post about this, but what i will say is because of how toxic masculinity has become and the "man-opshere", two men showing affection to eachother, even in a platonic context, can and will be read as them being inlove and dating.
Eye contact, smiling, hugging, anything that could be read in a romantic context will be read in a romantic context, no matter whether platonic or not.
My two favorite examples of this are phan and frerard. While frerard was..more..uh... yeah.. than phan, but even when not on stage normal moments between two obviously close friends are taken into romantic context.
Phan on the otherside... where do we even start? Over the course of 16 years, especially during the mid 2010s (2014-2019), during the peak of the phandom, these two were subject to fanfiction, fanart, and some borderline creepy "analysis" videos about them. Although stating that they were just really good friends, that didnt matter.
One could argue that the nature of their 2009 and 2010 videos together, old tweets made by them, they way the spoke about eachother, the way they spoke to eachother, the way they looked at eachother, the way they...shared clothes..with eachother..(normal friend thing to do for those unclear on what im saying), could mean that they were/are romantically involved with eachother but..why does it matter?
"b-b-but dan said in his coming out video that their relationship was more than romantic!!" and? friendships can be more than romantic. "but they were actually together the whole time!!!" still doesn't make it okay.
my conclusion to the phan part of this blog is that, yes they were together, yes they made some... cryptic, to say the least, posts back around the early early 2010s, but you would think that if they WANTED to talk about it, if they WANTED people to know about their relationship status, they would tell people? and they did tell people, maybe not the truth, but if you have thousands of people trying to pick apart every little thing you do with your best friend, co-worker, and roomate, you wouldnt be honest either, would you?
Now, im not going to sit here a lie that i havent participate in real person shipping and i think everyone who does should burn in the firey pits of hell for all eternity. But i will say it gets to a point.
In euphoira, season 1, theres a fanfiction scene of harry styles and louis tomlinson. neither of them were contacted and asked permission for this to take place in the show.
Markiplier and jacksepticeye were also subject to this shipping. while they were put in a popular show without permission, they werent uh...making out on stage infront of thousands of people, and they werent actually dating, smut fanart and fanfiction was still made about them.
im not even going to bring up dreamnotfound oh my fucking god 💔💔
The point im trying to make here is uh... im not really sure to be honest. if anyone has read this far (hi jasmine) there is really no point to this post. i feel its just a reflection on some real person ships ive seen.
In conclusion, mind your own buisness. these are real people with real feelings and relationships.
