super weird books （＾_＾）

here’s a list of some of the most bizarre books i’ve ever read, alongside the ratings i gave them. i won’t go into depth on synopses or anything—if a title piques your interest check it out on goodreads, their descriptions are better than mine would be :P and stay tuned to see my THIRD FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. which doesn’t sound like a high honor in itself but i’ve read and loved A Lot of books so that actually says a lot lol

❝ Castle Faggot ❞  by Derek McCormack

started my review with “if you don’t like this book you’re either not gay enough or not paying attention”. a bizarre trip of a story that still has coherent messages to convey. one of my favorite works of queer fiction ever.

❝ Blood and Guts in High School ❞  by Kathy Acker

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

difficult read — heavy trigger warnings abound. very dark, grim, but manages to be a little fun and have some incredible prose. not as bizarre as some of the others on this list but definitely deserving of a spot on here. i don’t want to say too much but this leans on the grosser, jesus-christ-the-depths-of-human-depravity-run-so-deep side of weird

❝ Mood Swings ❞  by Frankie Barnet

really didn’t like this one but maybe somebody else will. super strange post-apocalypse story involving a billionaire who killed every single non-human animal with a sound heard across the world to end the spontaneous animals vs humans war. i absolutely LOVED the premise but didn’t vibe with the humor or characters.

❝ I Will Kill Your Imaginary Friend for $200 ❞  by Robert Brockway

the most traditionally-structured story on this list and one of the milder ones in terms of weirdness, but it involves one of those weird fetishistic kids youtube content characters essentially coming to life and wreaking havoc, having to be stopped by an old man who’s battled his own terrible wars against imaginary friends. very tense but ultimately a little heartwarming. you really start to feel for these characters.

❝ Werecockroach ❞  by Polenth Blake

small novella about aliens and humans who can turn into cockroaches. includes neopronoun representation which is so cool & awesome to me!! nothing groundbreaking but it’s a fun little read. and weird, of course.

❝ Several People are Typing ❞  by Calvin Kasulke

this one is my third favorite book of all time. super simple, fun premise—what if your average office worker became trapped in microsoft teams? short and weird, but adorable and so so endearing. kind of feels like an interdimensional The Office episode. told almost entirely through chat messages, so if you’re just getting back into reading this would be the most accessible pick
