i feel like a problem with modern social media is that the algorithms tend to fall into two categories. they're either:
1. based on what's getting the most attention and views, or
2. based on things the user's engagement history.
the issues with this are that not everything that ends uo getting the most views is actually getting them for good (or even real) reasons, and on retroweb platforms like this and spacehey, people can just spam click whatever they want to make it seem "trending (i wont name names but theres someone on here who used to do this)," and that the content hating on and being hostile towards things a person engaged with out of genuine enjoyment will always show up on their feed.
on here, you actually have to get the most positive engagement to get to the top while you technically can give kudos to your own posts, the maximum is two, so you cant give so many that it immediately shoots you to the top. people are less likely to give kudos on posts that are upsetting, inflamatory, or overall poor in quality.
it's a lot more difficult for people to hack the system and force their content to the top, because they cant spam clicks or kudos on their posts. the only real way to hack it is to constantly post things to always show up in latest + make posts that always attempt to start a conversation, and even then a lot of people will scroll past people whose posts show up every few hours.
much to think about, i guess.

frr!!! i havent seen any toxic posts on here yet and i've been browsing for the past few hours. i had a weird interaction but theres always bad actors on a public website but it doesn't seem like its a common occurance! glad theres someone for people to talk without getting judged for what they like.
