Hey there my ghouls!
This is River once again, bringing you a new blog this time in collaboration with Vamplastic. Today, we have a very special post about the Backrooms movie, which was released this past June 5th, 2026.
On my end, you will get an analysis from the perspective of someone who has been consuming the online content for quite a while. This includes Kane Pixels´ videos, community lore, wikis and games...
A ver important disclaimer before we begin:
You don´t need to worry about any sudden spoilers. This blog is structured with warnings.
First, there will be a "Expectations" and "General Impressions" section that is completely free from spoilers, just in case anyone that hasn´t seen the movie yet wants to know if it´s worth watching. After that, we will dive into a deeper analysis of the events in the movie, character psychology etc..!
There is nothing else to add before we get started, except to remind you to check out Vamplastic´s profile afterwards to see what they have to say!
Let´s get into it!!!
Movie Expectations
Let´s start with what was buzzing around this head of mine when the movie was first announced.

While it´s true the creator, Kane Parsons, was fully involved in directing the project, the people backing it are true industry titans. We are talking about Attomic Monster (The Conjuring and Insidious), 21 Laps Entertainment (behind Stranger Things)...and knowing this left me with a small but constant worry about some sort of corporate pressure to "Hollywoodize" the film.
Hand in hand with this fear came another concern, one that I feel plagues today´s media: the obssesion with over-explaining. Modern cinema seems terrified of ambiguity, of silence, of letting things in the dark...and doing that to the Backrooms would have been catastrophic. This world thrives on uncertainty and the sheer helplessness born from not understanding the rules of where you are trapped. Giving it a direct story, along with neat rules to follow would have destroyed that nightmarish mysticism.
On top of that, there was the technical challenge of transitioning from the renders Kane used to make in Blender to physical sets. There was a real risk of loosing that eerie, unsettling effect that only certain digital formats can truly deliver.
However, after watching the A24 trailer, I must say that I walked into my local theater with pretty high expectations.
Review (Non-Spoiler)
Fortunately, I can tell you that my fears vanished from the very first scene. The theater experience was great!. You can tell from a mile away that there is a deep respect for the source material here; they managed to translate the atmosphere perfectly combining it with music that made the tension even louder. If you´re a fan, you´re going to feel like that first time you encountered a found footage video on youtube and, have those eyes open!
There are easter eggs everywhere!
And if you´re going in completely blind...you´re going to find a movie that stays clear of boring Hollywood clichés and keeps you hooked at a slow but intense pace!

It far exceeded what I was looking for; I´m ready to hunt down the DVD as soon as I can afford it!
Analysis
(This Contains Spoilers!)
Well, we´ve finally made it to the longest part of this blog, so I hope you brought a nice energy drink, cause I´m about to dissect (or at least try to) both main characters and their psychological development from start to finish, as well as try to understand certain events that are left unaswered.
I´ve tried to keep it as compact as possible because I tend to ramble too much LOL....If it were up to me, this post would go on for miles and miles, but I´ll try to keep it short and sweet.

Let´s go!
As Phil reveals to us during the movie, ASYNC was conducting research by tracking strong electromagnetic fields. It was precisely while doing this that they accidentally stumble upon the anomaly that would become the KV31 Project. They tore a rift in the fabric of reality without having the slightlest clue about what layed on the other side. Instead of sealing off the danger, they saw this place as a goldmine. They set up cameras, gathered data, lost lives...and all they did was cover it up with paperwork and keep moving like nothing happened.
It is under these circumstances that Clark finds himself stumbling into Level 0. Right from the start, it´s quite clear that this man is not your typical hero or average victim; he is the living definition of progressive decay. A frustated architect who never achieved his dream, divorced, alcoholic and trapped within the walls of a business on the brink of collapse. His life in the outside world was already a "desolated liminal space", haunted by empty rooms and memories of a life that no longer belonged to him...and all because of his fault.
That´s why I think that when he first encounters The Backrooms, despite the initial terror and bewilderment caused by the shock of the unexpected, he keeps coming back. Clark sees this space as a place to map out and make his own. Because of this "expeditions" the complex starts to absorb his mind, spitting out incomplete replicas of his memories here and there.
Furniture from his own business, his throne from the commercials, his workers t-shirt...

After the incident with Kat and Bobby, this place becomes his permanent "home". This desperate refusal to leave the only place where he feels powerful and in control drives him to discover that he can feed on the organic duplicates generated by the dimension itself.
With the entrance of Captain Clark onto the scene, a disturbing biological rule of this place is revealed to us: The Still Lifes (organic and malleable manifestations created by the dimension after the absorption of memories, trauma...). We can see that he wears the pirate clothing from his store´s advertisements, possibly representing a part of himself that he considers humiliating. We also see his face disfigured, which, while it could certainly just be the enviroment making the Still Lifes monstrous, it could also be a reflection of Clark´s alcoholism (mirroring how he sees himself in a mirror when he is under the influence).
Another point in favor of this theory would be the fact that the Backrooms representation of his wife flees the moment the Captain appears, whereas she is perfectly calm and still around human Clark. Perhaps a representation of the abuse suffered when he would arrive home drunk and the main reason for their "divorce"
Why divorce in quotation marks?
Well, during the forced reenactment of the events from the night his ex-wife left him, we can see that Clark acts much more aggresive than he did during those same reenactments in Mary´s consult. He responds in a louder tone and towards the end we can see that his true intention was to end Mary´s life.

Was this the effect of the backrooms on his mind? Or was he being honest for the first time? Dropping a hint that Barbara might have actually left him...but not in the way we though...
Just as we see in the movie, after Mary confronts him, Clark is forced for the first time to face reality. Up until that moment, Clark had been coexisting with the Captain in a sort of truce, as he had embraced his own destructive nature believing, as he puts it, that he was "right where he was meant to be". Upon colliding with reality though, that statement shatters and the creature turns on him without hesitation, ending his life.
Let´s move onto Mary!
This character begins the film shielded by an intellectual and authoritative armor. However, her role as a therapist is not just her profession, but a defense mechanism, an unconcious transference of her own unresolved wound and trauma. Mary wants to save Clark from his loop because she is actually proyecting her desire to resolve her own traumas...the domestic confinement and psychological suffocation she suffered in her childhood due to his mother´s agoraphobia. In my opinion, her character climax occurs when she finally confronts Clark in the Backrooms, triggering the event we previously explained.
During her scape through the rooms, Mary´s neatness and professional composure completely unravel, leaving her with a chaotic appearance as the surrounding enviroment forces her to face her own mind, until she is "rescued" by the ASYNC containment team.

Once inside the facilities, we witness Mary´s end.
Her entire downfall is coded into the design of the interrogation room, where the windows foreshadow her fate.
At the beginning of the interrogation, a low angle shot places the strip of windows connecting to the real world at Mary´s level, symbolizing that she has finally faced her past and she´s ready to be free, to open that window she talks so much about in her tapes. However, when the interrogator Phil avoids at all costs answering her question regarding her freedom, the camera returns to her in a sharp frontal angle. From this angle we can see that the windows behind Mary had been too high to reach this whole time, while those behind Phil, the ones that lead into ASYNC and the Backrooms are wide open and perfectly accesible.
This realization provokes a tired and devastated smile on her face.
The camera then descends into the depths of the Backrooms, after several shots showcasing the place recreating Mary´s memories we find her Still Life form.

While her mind and trauma will remain trapped down in the Backrooms her biologycal body that was finally ready to be free will be held under human custody above.
The End
(Finally)
I almost added a section for easter eggs, but I think this blog is already long enough!
(Maybe I´ll make a future one for it👀)
This are just my impressions on the movie and what i understood after watching it on the theater.
Please feel free to share your own thoughts and theories about the movie in the comments below!
That´s all for now :)
Stay curious, my ghouls.
