I do believe that the alt community is probably one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented communities in the world. And I also feel, after 50+ years, alt has became repetitive mainstream corporate slop.
Before I get into this let’s get our definitions first. I believe being alt is having your own free will and individuality, while also NOT conforming to societal norms, but your own. For me, being alt is VERY political. For example, not supporting ANY form of government/presidency, and also fighting for what's right. Also, fashion IS a part into being alt but you don't need 20 bracelets on each arm just to be alt, nor do u have to wear a shirt saying fuck trump on it. Am I alt or identify as it? No. Do I like and respect the culture and its history? Yes. So enough useless talking and let’s talk about why alt is slowing dying.
1. Mainstream posers: And when i say poser I don't mean someone just starting out, I mean someone who brings down others or just pretends to be "alt". For example, "Y2K 2000s older brother SHEIN core guys" are the biggest posers in the community. They will call themselves alt but have their entire wardrobe from SHEIN or Temu, and I don't need to explain why those companies are bad. And they also think alt is just a fashion trend when really it’s also about music and politics.
2. The sexualization and fetishization of alt people. We all seen them right? Those “goth girls” who sexualize themselves for male attention, or those guys who say “I want a THICK GOTH DOMMY MOMMY who can crush me 🤤” them alone are single handling destroying the alt community, dehumanizing ACTUAL alt people making it seem like it’s okay to harass people when it’s NOT. And those goth girls who sexualize themselves, fashion wise ARENT even goth. They just wear black lipstick and call it a day.
3. Racist/Homophobic/Hateful "alt" people. Like, that doesn't even make sense. If you're hating on POC, Queer people, and therians, you're automatically NOT alt. You're fucking the brand up. Especially alt people that are trump supporters.
4. Fast Fashion companies. Because tell me why I saw a DIY HAT at HOT TOPIC??? I genuinely don't understand how people can shop at hot topic when they can make their own stuff for like $5. Cus I am NOT buying a 100% polyester shirt made by the hands of a starving child. Fast Fashion literally took the life and soul out of Alt fashion. Alt fashion was built off of poor kids using DIY and torn up clothes and pants to make something with soul and meaning. Alt fashion meant being able to express yourself with limited resources. Now it's just expensive garbage that everyone wears so they can fit in.
5. Alt police: we all know them, people that would go buck crazy if you don’t listen to a random second wave emo band that has 2 songs and 13 listeners. The ones that always boss around beginniers calling them posers for wearing a MCR shirt, which is someone we ALL have done. Or they would just shit on you in general for liking pop-punk or nu metal. Alt was supposed to be about inclusion and being welcoming to people in the community, not bringing them down and shitting on them. If you really cared you would introduce into more niche or underrated bands instead of bullying them.
Well this is getting pretty long so imma just stop hear… this is really just an rewrite of an old spacehey blog I had I just added more stuff.

You shouldn't care for alternative culture, it's just another way for people to conform. Being alternative to the alternative takes real courage and self reflection.
The truth of the matter is there aren't many trve individuals out in the world.

I honestly do agree with this take which is kind of unpopular, I do not really consider myself alternative or into any specific subculture, I pretty much just grabbed bits of things I liked and made it my own. I considered myself goth and punk for a few years, and even if today I don't identify myself with those groups anymore, I can say I'm grateful for the things they taugth me, for teaching the importance of political involvement and to teach me how to make more ethical decisions before buying.

i feel like one of the worst parts of all this is that we are in a current polithical state where the alt community SHOULD BE working together and more close than ever. So many communities in the alt population are facing being locked up, dehumanized and fucking killed simply to who they are (trans, poc, queer, woman, disbaled) and instead of working towards the common goal of dismantling the laws eliminating the higher ups who are the reason for our suffering, we keep recucling the same bullshit talking points and shit on each for like you said : " people that would go buck crazy if you don’t listen to a random second wave emo band that has 2 songs and 13 listeners. honestly its exhausting. like the least we can do as the youth is stay informed, be empathetic and authentic. instead were here😐
