March 21 1967
Charles Manson, after serving 10 years in prison for being indicted on federal Mann Act charges, aka transporting people across state lines for prostitution purposes, and he now heads out for San Francisco
Surfing with the cult master
There's actually a connection to Charles Manson and The Beach Boys! In the summer of 1968, Dennis Wilson, the drummer of the Beach Boys, somehow befriended Charles Manson and let Manson and his followers stay at his home for several months.
Their friendship went sour after Dennis realized how much money he'd been blowing through to pay for Manson and his followers to live there. And so Dennis, not wanting to fight, left his home with the lease set to expire.
Afterwards, Dennis also took Manson's song "Cease To Exist" and tweaked it and renamed it as his own "Never Learn Not To Love"
Eventually Manson and his followers settled at the Spahn Ranch in summer of 1968, after their eviction from Wilson's house.
Doomsday Ideology and The Beatles
Manson's ideologies were strange to say the least, his followers states that he believed that the beatles White Album single had subliminal messaging of violence and stated at trail "These kids listen to this music and pick up the message. It's subliminal... It is not my music. I hear what it relates. It says 'Rise.' It says 'Kill.' Why blame it on me? I didn't write the music." And Manson's followers said that his ideology also made him believe the there would be some type of weird apocalyptic race war that would happen in the L.A area.
But on the Peacock docuseries 'Making Manson' Manson on a prison call is heard stating "They made it into 'Helter Skelter. It wasn't 'Helter Skelter," and "They said it was a race war. It wasn't a race war. It wasn't what they said." And he said in a one-taped conversation "Helter Skelter wasn't my trip" and "That was a fucking game, man."
Killing Spree in the summer of 1969
March 23 1969: Manson visits the Tate residence looking for Terry Melcher to talk about publishing his music but is told to leave.
The victims
July 31th 1969: Gary Hinman is stabbed to death and next to him in his blood was "political piggy" on the wall
August 8-9th 1969: Pregnant actress Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, and Steven Parent were all murdered by Manson's followers by his order and the word "pig" was found written on the front door in Tate's blood.
August 10th 1969: Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary were stabbed to death in their own home by Mansons followers And the words "Death to pigs" were on the walls and "Healter Skelter" on the refrigerator door, all in LaBianca's blood.
August 26th 1969: Donald Jerome "Shorty" Shea was murdered by Manson's followers.
October 12th 1969: Manson is arrested at Barker Ranch and charged with grand theft auto and is tossed in jail.
Caught and the Aftermath
November 6th 1969: Susan Atkins while in jail, a follower, confessed to fellow inmates about participating in the Tate murders.
July 24th 1970: The Tate and LaBianca murder trail begins, with Charles Manson, Susan Atkins and two other followers as the defendants.
January 25th 1971: Jury convicts all the Tate and LaBianca defendants of first-degree murder and gives the death penalty to all four of them.
1972: The California Supreme Court struck down the state's death penalty so Manson and his followers are given life in prison instead.
During Manson's trial for the murders of seven people, his debut album, Lie: The Love and Terror Cult, was released in March 1970. Consisting of 13 tracks recorded between 1967 and 1968, it included Manson's og verison of "Cease To Exist"/"Never Learn Not To Love"
November 19, 2017: Charles Manson died in prison at the age of 83.
July 2023: Leslie Van Houten became the first convicted Manson family member to be released on parole.
