Would the "New" MySpace actually give you anything you don’t already have? Because if the answer is no, maybe the comeback y’all have been waiting for has already happened.

My question to most people when I hear about Myspace and it's possible "comeback" is "If you really want the feeling of MySpace back, then why haven’t you joined any of the sites that have already brought it back?"

There are already communities built around recreating the experience that made the early social web so special. FriendRewind is one of them. I'll even go as far as mentioning some others just to make a point. (SpaceHey, FriendProject, Bliish.)

They are all examples of platforms bringing back customizable profiles, music, friendships, communities, and the freedom to make your own little corner of the internet yours again.

Sure, they’re not MySpace itself. But many seem to be missing the point. These platforms are bringing back "the feeling of what the internet used to be" before everything became optimized, personalized, recommended, and controlled by algorithms.

If you're old enough to remember the Myspace we had, why is it that we all have seemed to forgotten about MySpace 1.0, 2.0, and 2.5 and how frustrated we were when features were removed or changed? Did we also forget that many of us eventually left MySpace for Facebook because MySpace was no longer giving us the experience we wanted?

That’s what makes this idea of a MySpace "comeback" so interesting to me... 

We’ve already experienced what happens when a platform changes too much. The name might stay the same, but the experience can become something completely different and today, we already have places where people can customize their profiles, add music, meet people, build communities, and actually make their little corner of the internet feel like their own again.

The difference is that these sites don’t have the nostalgic MySpace name attached to them. Maybe the real question is "Are we looking for MySpace, or are we looking for what MySpace used to be?"

Because those are two very different things. If what you really miss is the customization, creativity, music, profiles, friendships, and freedom of the old social web, then there are already places where you can experience it again.

So I’ll say it again: "The comeback y’all have been waiting for has already happened."

You just decided to overlook it because it wasn’t branded with the nostalgic name MySpace.

Maybe it’s time we stop waiting for a name to bring the old internet back and start supporting the communities that are already keeping that experience alive. *Cough Cough* FriendRewind.

The old internet isn’t completely gone. You just have to know where to look.
