Anyone else realize that Dallas Winston didn’t make it to his 18th birthday?

He was 17 when he died. His birthday is November 9th. The outsiders took place a month after ponyboys birthday and a few weeks before sodapops, meaning it was about August-September time. Dally was about 2-3 months until he was 18 years old. About 2-3 months until he could’ve pulled Johnny out of that abusive house hold that overcame him. If the book took place 2-3 months after it originally did, would Johnny and dally really be dead? Or would they have dodged all the troubles that came across?
