I charged the phone because the battery light had started blinking again, red and insistent, like it had somewhere to be.
It’s ridiculous, keeping a phone this old alive for one unheard thing. I know that. I’ve known that for years.
Anthony de Luca, one new voicemail.
He’s been dead eight of them.
I sit at the kitchen table, the charger stretched across the counter like a leash. I tell myself I’ll just press play and get it over with.
A pause. A breath. Then—
“Lena.”
Not Marlena. Not Mar. Lena, the way he said it when it was just us.
“If you’re hearing this, it means I didn’t get to tell you the way I meant to.”
He clears his throat. Faint tile echo.
“I didn’t want to hand you this while I was still here. It’s the kind of thing that grows teeth if you let it. I figured… better you decide if you want it at all.”
“You know I never had answers about where I came from. Sealed records, dead ends. All that.” A soft huff of a laugh. “Turns out, that’s not the end anymore. Just expensive.”
Something inside my chest shifts.
“I hired a man. Good one. Stubborn.” Another pause. “There’s a box in the bottom drawer of my desk—the one that sticks. I labeled it ‘Receipts’ so you wouldn’t open it by accident.”
Of course he did.
“In there, a folder. Names. Addresses. A photograph I’m still getting used to.”
His voice changes—not breaking, just wider.
“My mother’s name was Lucia. I have a brother. Had, I guess.”
The room feels tilted.
“I didn’t call them. I got close. Close enough to know you could find them if you wanted to.”
A longer pause. Just his breathing.
“I didn’t do it because I didn’t want you to feel like you had to finish something for me. This isn’t a loose end, Lena. It’s a door. You can leave it shut. You can walk through it. Either way, you don’t owe it to me.”
“I just didn’t want you locked out, the way I was.”
A small sound, like he’s shifting the phone.
“I hope you’re somewhere with light. You always liked the light.”
Another breath.
“Alright. That’s enough from me.”
“Take your time.”
The message clicks off.
The kitchen is exactly as it was. The same chair, the same table, the same quiet.
Only now there is a drawer in another room that has never been closed.
