[SPOILERS FROM THE "OBSESSION" MOVIE]
my fav scene from obsession is definitely that one where nikki (the actual nikki) communicates with bear and asks him to kill her.
i honestly feel like not so many people got it actually right. i saw many people refer to it as he "ignores her"; actually, he doesn't. he answers to her pleas, he spits on her face just asking her why did she never love him. he doesn't even seem to mind that she was literally begging to be murdered and makes the whole thing abt him.
that's the final point, the peak of the predator. where he crosses that "i feel so lonely that i'd rather for her to love me like this than nothing" line. he told without the actual words that he doesn't mind her suffering and her struggling as long as he can pretend she loves him. in fact, nikki always loved him, just that not in the same way, but she was his friend and seemed to be really fond w him. she was nice and true and, most importantly, she was FREE.
bear doesn't want her that way, doesn't want her free. just think abt that, when he's upset bc she's going to quit her job; who cares? she'll still be living in the town, they still will be able to talk on the phone, but he just can't get that she's leaving him VERY slightly apart. bc nikki just wants to spend more time with herself, but bear isn't capable to look after that because he only sees her as this being that only lives of what he wants from her. and when that girl he outwords to love cracks just lightly that dream, he actively leaves it.
the real lucid time is when you understand that the actual obsessesion was that one from a guy and his perfect dream girl that just orbites around him.

That scene genuinely made my stomach twist when I saw it. Because what...? She's lying in that bed, begging to be put out of her misery, begging to be let free from the nightmare that is her life now, yet the only thing Bear could think about was "why does she not love me?"
It just hammers home that selfishness is a core trait of his. That despite being scared of her, he still can't let go of this delusion that maybe one day she'll love him back the way he always fantasized she would. It's just sickening and horrifying to watch as he takes advantage of her repeatedly even when he knows its wrong. His greed and gluttony is an endless pit that he continues to shovel his delusional hopes into with no sign of being satisfied.
Not being able to control her is his own personal nightmare. He doesn't love her, he's never loved her. Loving her would mean letting her go, watching his dreams of making her his lover slip from his fingers, and not getting his way is somehow worse than the situation he's made for himself. He only wanted a fantasy. One where he has a life outside of her, but where her whole world is him and him only. Where he can do no wrong and be coddled and doted on infinitely.
But suddenly it isn't okay when it backfires on him. When she tapes the door shut and prevents him from hanging out with his friends, when she's possessive to an aggressive degree, crying and screaming for him to only see her. For him, his whole world to revolve around her and her alone is seen as an abusive situation that he doesn't want to be in, a scary trap that, while the bait in the center looks highly appealing, isn't worth the chance of injury. Yet Bear still sticks his foot into it willingly, lets it clamp down into his flesh then blames the bait for his foolish actions.
And his selfishness extends even after his death. Where he leaves her with the aftermath of his choices. There she sits, free from the wishes powers, but still trapped by Bear. Still trapped in his clutches, surrounded by the bodies of people she once cared about and with unimaginable mental scars from the whole situation. He left her with a life she can't continue to live after what he did. Her life is effectively over, because who would believe a girl covered in blood that some stupid scam called a One Wish Willow controlled her and made her do it?
I always wondered why he didn't shoot her first before trying to shoot himself, but that's just another instance of his selfishness. He only thought of himself right 'til the end. He only gave himself a way out and left her to suffer.
god you just explained it absolutely perfect. he literally condemned that girl that he claimed to love, that called him a friend, to live the next of her days thinking about herself as the killer of her friends even tho she was activately trying to escape from this nightmare. and dude literally just got mad because he couldn't control her even tho she was obviously fighting back herself.
also, these moments where she injuries herself (e.x the whiskey bottle scene) are literally her trying to kill herself, trying to resist to this. but bear just can't see it bc he's too busy being scared of her.
