Thomas Wiggins, the Enslaved Musical Prodigy Known as Blind Tom

I may or not do a series of people that I think history overlooks or has been forgotten. Either way, I went down a rabbit hole learning about Thomas Wiggins today :)

Better known by his stage name, “Blind Tom.” Born blind and enslaved in Georgia in 1849, Wiggins became one of the most famous pianists and composers of the nineteenth century. Historical accounts suggest that he was autistic and had an extraordinary ability to remember, reproduce, and compose music.

He performed at the White House as a child and later toured throughout the United States and Europe. Although his performances generated enormous profits, Wiggins remained under the control of white enslavers, managers, and legal guardians for nearly his entire life and received little benefit from his own success.

His story is one of remarkable artistry, as well as lifelong exploitation.
